Bats new threat for survival: shale gas industry


Bats, already reeling and in some cases endangered due to deadly white-nose syndrome, are facing new stresses from shale gas development companies that could impact their long-term survival.

Nine shale gas companies have asked the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a 50-year “incidental take permit” that would allow them to impact already decimated bat populations while drilling gas and oil wells, operating compressor stations and installing pipelines throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
