SF Symphony Cancels Concerts In NC to Protest Discriminatory HB2 Law
The San Francisco Symphony has canceled two tour concerts scheduled for April 5-6 in Chapel Hill, N.C., in response to the passage of the state law that overturned protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
The Symphonys decision is one of a raft of positions taken by government, businesses and cultural bodies in protest of the act, known as HB2. Mayor Ed Lee has barred publicly funded travel to the state by city employees except in emergency situations. In September, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to block San Francisco from entering into contracts with companies based in states, such as North Carolina, that bar civil rights protections for LGBT people.
The two North Carolina tour dates represent half of the orchestras East Coast tour. Two concerts on April 7-8 in New Yorks Carnegie Hall, featuring music by Bartók, Mahler, Cage and Shostakovich, will go ahead as planned.
