I think the public outcry would be tremendous if the EC played chickenshit and pushed either of those or somebody else.

(10,129 posts)By tradition - and by law in some states - they pick the winner of the popular vote in their states. But I don't think they have to, and there have been cases where an elector or three votes for a non-candidate as a protest vote.

(19,264 posts)if no candidate gets 270 votes then the top 3 candidates go to the house and the house votes on the winner.
Still if it is very very very very very unlikely enough Trump electors will defect to make a difference. Electors are the hyper partisans of the hyper partisans. Essentially party insiders, state campaign heads, major donors, VIPs, etc. They didn't get to be a Trump elector without the campaign being convinced they would vote Trump.
