Watch Bernie Sanders turn Trump voter into a Liberal (VIDEO)

In this year of change this type of exchange with a Trump voter, is the reason many believed Bernie Sanders could reach the Mid-Western voters. Chris Hayes placed four Trump voters on the stage at the town-hall-like forum next to Senator Bernie Sanders. One woman, in particular, had the stereotypical attributes of a Trump voter. It was magical watching her transformation as Bernie Sanders was able to reach her.

Bernie Sanders did three important things. He listened intently and early on he gained her respect because he was not always trying to make his point. She knew he was listening because he paraphrased her when necessary. When she made her racist comments, he knew it was not the time to address her directly but he addressed it through his attack on Donald Trump. One is not going to eradicate metastasized racism in an election cycle and as such one cannot hold an election hostage or paralyzed by a long term problem. It is not an excuse for ignoring racism. It is a pragmatic approach that must be situational for the best outcome. Lastly, Sanders used Sparks needs and wants to show that it was anathema to Republicanism/Trumpism. By the end, she was just as mad at the plutocracy as good progressives are.

This approach takes time because the narrative must be designed for American micro-cells. It is the same message but it has to made within the reality of the recipient which is different from town to town, city to city, neighborhood to neighborhood, culturally, racially, and otherwise. That is how we win again.

we have tRump for the moment and there's not much we can do to change that, right now. In the long game we can change this kind of thinking that put him there though.

So, Yes, I have time for this.

I have just simply lost patience with expecting to be able to change the mind of anyone daft enough to support Trump. I have my agenda for how I'm dealing / going to deal with the horrifying outcome of this election. It is not to stick my head in the sand, but to help the vulnerable and bring pressure at the elective level, that is...calls / letters / emails to elected representatives.

I am just not that confident of being able to change such entrenched and wilfully ignorant hearts and minds. Goddess bless Bernie, but he is not going to able to go person to person and do this in a permanent way. He will need an army.

and a chill to discussion and engagement on this topic.

I, of course, don't know how old you are. I am in my 60s. My game IS the short game. I think that we all should be supported as to whatever way we are going to deal with this reign of terror. If you intend to engage to change minds, one on one, as I say, good on ya.

I work in the non-profit sector delivering service directly to vulnerable and low-income populations. I will be focusing my efforts there.

Neither is better or deserves necessarily to be discounted.

With one grand child, a grand daughter that I'm here to protect today and every day I have left. Its her world tomorrow that is my world today

I'm from a big family who were church house mouse poor growing up but we, thank the good fortune, have pulled ourselves up out of the poor house as a family. Oldest one in my family is soon to be 86, youngest is soon to be 65, seven of us spread out over that time frame. All successful people in their own right.

One Sis is the recipient of that honorable effort you deal with daily

I hurt for.

Please share with me...how are you going to implement the one heart / one mind at a time strategy? I'm sorry, but, I just don't think it will succeed, not that it's not worth the effort. Maybe this "Trump voter turned liberal" appeared to turn in that moment on that program, but I don't believe it will hold.

What do I think WILL succeed? Perhaps only a hard lesson learned. Perhaps only living through the damaging consequences of their vote and views. Shame though that they are taking the rest of us down with them. No matter what, this country is changing. Before long whites will be in the minority. The demographic shift that is coming may well be our renaissance. Time for old white people to lose their stranglehod.

I don't recall the details of the social study that I learned about many years ago in college, but the essence was that people tend to listen to media and opinions that reinforce their own. It is extremely difficult if even possible to change entrenched attitudes of racism, misogyny, and xenophobia.

As I say, your way of solving the problem, mine, whosever...even those who can't deal and turn inward.. For me the essence is to support one another and strengthen our bonds in this very dark time. Love breeds love.

I will also admit that during Shrub's administration our family force-fed The West Wing. President Bartlet WAS our President. If this "disaster" actually ascends to the Presidency, I expect we will find another alternate reality to live in.

That's all I have to say on this subject.

Thanks.

its not a one heart, one mind thing. what Bernie is doing is setting examples as to how to reach people. He reached me and sounds like he's reached you too, even though we've been reached for a long time, so to say.
My experience is I learn more by seeing than I do by listening

Peace

I turned it off. Frankly, I voted for Bernie, but I am less interested in the "I Told You So" tour than I am in The Trump "Get Fucked" tour.
The house is on fire and we have to stop this right now. No more time for who was right and who was wrong within the party or the state. The roof is on fire fight now. No time to try too convince the arsonists that they were wrong in setting the fire; time to put the fire out!.
The battle has shifted to preventing the orange stain from destroying the republic. What is Bernie doing about that? That is what I want to hear from him.
That is what I want to hear from every Democrat in office and out and every journalist as well.

he had a Big Mouth and he is White.
A big mouth that was willing to tell any lie the rubes wanted to hear. The other one is so obvious I need not go further on it.

We have a lot of bigoted and racist assholes in this country. I honestly thought we were getting past that with the election of our first black President but man o man was I wrong on that. They started coming out of the wood work like I never knew could be done.

to consider the Democrat's issues and ideas. Bernie does a great job at this.

Hopefully people will understand that this was not intended to be a Democratic rally. Bernie will continue to do those as well but this is outreach to those who chose to vote Republican. Swing voters the Democrats will need in 2018 & 2020 to take back seats in government from the local level to the US Congress.

Both types of events are good for the Democratic message and issues.
