And Putin wants the West fragmente and its alliances disrupted. The more nations are isolated from one another in terms of diplomacy, the easier for Russia to do what it wants.

7. Russia wants to stop China from developing oil resources in South China Sea

Trump's motivations are to help Russia continue expanding their oil access and oil market and prevent China from developing their own sources of oil and gas. China is dependent on Russian oil but if China develops their own oil supplies in contested S China Sea (which they would greatly prefer to smoggy coal), Russia loses revenue and price of oil could fall.

Trump has advocated more American ships in S China Sea. That and befriending Taiwan probably to slow down China's efforts to expand their power and access to potential oil sources there.

I read that Trump owes millions to Bank of China. Don't know how that plays into his maneuvers.

Problem is China has potential to retaliate against US in unpredictable ways.
