Chris Hayes just compared the era we are about to enter to the era after the United States removed troops from the south and abandoned the freedman in 1877 in return for Democrats acceding to the ascension of Rutherford B. Hayes as president after the disputed election.

(52,208 posts)in this election, we just got screwed.
as for the treatment of minorities, we've already entered a similar era, considering the various disenfranchisement laws that have already been implemented in republican-controlled states for years now.

(46,166 posts)The difference is that now minorities and gay people aren't putting up with the crap. The gov't may be stronger than groups but people, united are not willing to go back to living in oppression or go back into the closet. They speak out, march, make demands based on equal protection.
So it won't be as easy to oppress groups when they join together in common cause. Women, people of color, Muslims, gay folk - that's a lot of people.
Anyhow, it crossed my mind this morning when I got to thinking again about how McCrory lost his reelection in North Carolina. I expected that he would prevail. His loss is our lesson on how to never give up. I guess that's always been the lesson of history. Unfortunately, the other side certainly understand that, too.
