Sanders: Tillerson 'must be opposed'
Sanders: Tillerson 'must be opposed'
BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 12/13/16 12:05 PM EST
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) says Rex Tillerson, President-elect Donald Trumps choice for secretary of State, must be opposed.
Mr. Trump's nomination of Rex Tillerson for secretary of State is sending a very troubling message to the international community, Sanders said in a statement.
Not only is Mr. Tillerson a pal of Russia's authoritarian leader, Vladimir Putin, but he is the head of one of the largest oil companies in the world, he added.
Tillerson is facing criticism from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress for his ties to Russia through his business dealing as the CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp.

(6,139 posts)Wishful thinking. I think Rex is gonna slide through confirmation - Exxon is a big GOP donor. I don't think McCain and Graham are as powerful anymore. Condi praises the pick. We'd better spend our energy opposing EPA's director and fighting for ACA. Remember, trump is positioning russia as our key ally and no longer a foe - he campigned on praising putin. His voters did not and still do not care.

President-elect Donald Trump leaned on a collection of Republican foreign policy veterans for guidance in selecting ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as his nominee for secretary of state, according to sources familiar with the process.
Condoleezza Rice, Robert Gates, Stephen Hadley and James Baker, all of whom have business dealings with the oil giant, played a crucial role in convincing Trump's team to select Tillerson to become America's top diplomat.

(6,139 posts)this is like to say that republicans who were sponsored by Exxon (probably most of them) have conflicts of interest. We gotta be strategic and pick our battles.
Republicans now have the majority in the senate so democrat votes won't count for confirmation. GOP never cared about their conflicts of interest. It's the russian connection that worries 1-3 rep senators. I am still not seeing rex as evil and condi is no friend of russia. He seems like a cynical, pragmatic businessman with no ideology except if it involved profit. Trump could have done much much worse by selecting some war hawk or general.

So Putin went after HRC and installed DT.
If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's not a unicorn.

I get it but I take corruption over war. I wonder if Putin helped trump win the primaries? Financing, hacking opponents emails and sharing with trump campaign? I mean beating so many opponents without cheating seems like a stretch for trump.
That's the type of evidence that would help to set other republicans against trump (cruz, rubio, bushes, etc.) and electors may take note of that.

(108,995 posts)he's said he loves war, he already has the Chinese flying their nuclear armed warplanes over the China sea, and he's got Putin -- the warmonger and murderer -- purring in his ear.
DT already has so much firepower in this cabinet he could afford to leave a slot for some simple corruption.
