Eun Kyung Kim
TODAY
Soprano Jackie Evancho, who rose to fame on Americas Got Talent, will sing the national anthem at next month's presidential inauguration of Donald Trump, the 16-year-old prodigy announced Wednesday on TODAY.
"I'm so excited. It's going to be awesome," Evancho told the TODAY anchors.
Evancho will follow in the footsteps of Beyonce, who sang the national anthem at the second inauguration for President Obama, and Aretha Franklin, who performed during his first ceremony.
Evancho also has sung for Obama. In 2010, she performed for him and the first family at the National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at the Ellipse in front of the White House.

(46,078 posts)Trump is well known for threatening to destroy anyone who denies what he wants and she's young and vulnerable enough to be susceptible to this kind of threat.

(24,406 posts)I've been listening to her for the past year or so since I heard her amazing cover of "Rains of Castamere" from Game of Thrones. She is actually a rather good singer IMHO, but this sort of surprises me since she has a younger Trans sister, Juliet, who she is very close to/supportive of. Incidentally, Juliet and another Trans student have been in the news fairly recently due to them suing their Pennsylvania school system for their harassing behavior (due to them being Trans). I guess a gig is a gig, right- even if for somebody like Trump? Maybe she is just excited to play at an Inauguration (which I get somewhat- but at Trump's? )

(21,020 posts)oops.
Never heard of her, so she can't be that famous.
Anyway, she's 16. From where I am now, that's still like being a baby, so she doesn't know any better.
So it's hard to fault her for being excited over being part of a historic event...whether History, in years to come, views this as a good or bad thing.

But whatever: I'd never heard of her before and I doubt I ever will after, if this helps or hurts her career, or gives her joy or not, it's of no consequence to me...

I happened to watch that show and when she opened her mouth to sing it brought tears to my eyes, it's a Must-Watch performance. Michael Grimm won first place and she won second. And while he was my favourite it was hard to see either one of them have to settle for second place, and I believe he was pretty uncomfortable to win over her, but I guess that's part of the show. Sometimes everyone is a winner, but there is only one first place.
I hope no one harrasses her for choosing to perform. Everyone associated with Donald Trump gets demonized here, but please, she can make up her mind about him on her own when she gets a little older. Let her share her God-Given talent with the universe, that's what this is about.
