(1,893 posts)Federal investigators tried to warn the Democratic National Committee about a potential intrusion in their computer network months before the party moved to try to fix the problem, U.S. officials briefed on the probe tell CNN.
The revelation raises questions about whether the DNC could have done more to limit the damage done by hackers suspected of working for Russian intelligence.
The DNC brought in consultants from the private security firm CrowdStrike in April. And by the time suspected Russian hackers were kicked out of the DNC network in June, the hackers had been inside for about a year.

(51,513 posts)The FBI offices are only about a block away from the DNC offices in DC. As Rachel Maddow explained last night, the FBI could have walked over to the DNC and imparted on them the seriousness of the development instead of playing phone tag with the DNC's IT vendor who at first thought it was a prank call. I mean, if the Russians were hacking one of our two major political parties, why didn't the FBI agent forget the damn phone and walk over, show his badge and TELL the DNC leadership in person?

(806 posts)The DNC is a private organization. What business was it for the FBI to be monitoring the DNC email servers. Did they have a warrant?
Email servers are hacked nationwide on a regular basis without any Governmental warning or interference. Why was the FBI monitoring the DNC email servers in the first place?

(51,513 posts)I can't imagine a bigger threat to our sovereignty than a foreign power trying to install a president of their choosing by committing a Watergate level cyber break-in of the opposition candidate's campaign offices to get information to use against that opposition candidate so as to help their favored candidate.

Probably one of the easiest ways for administrators to detect hacks are each time they login as root is to press the up key a few times in terminal and see if there's any commands they don't recognize.
Checking logs usually works but a lot of hackers forget to edit the terminal log.
The DNC hack is on the DNC. It's your job to secure your stuff.
