(27,794 posts)The immediate damage might seem worse - and could be apocalyptic, which would be way worse - but the extent of harm W caused is yet to be determined.
His SCOTUS has certainly caused lasting harm, much of which we saw play out during this election cycle. We've barely recovered from his economic policies, and his wars continue.
I think it's a continuum from Reagan - unrestrained free market capitalism colliding with an upsurge in right-wing religions, which is playing out worldwide.

(42,641 posts)Reagan was the racist hiding behind the mask of a nice old man.
Bush was the racist hiding behind the affected Texas accent.
Trump is the up front and open racist who sees no need to hide behind a mask.

(5,268 posts)He was a stupid fool and I despised Bush and Cheney with a passion, but even with the Iraq invasion and his Axis of Evil rhetoric, I do not believe Bush was an Islamaphobe. He was foolish enough to believe Iraq would welcome us with open arms and everything there would work out successfully in just a few weeks after the invasion. He did not despise and scapegoat immigrants and Mexicans either.
Although Bush could be misleading and shady, he was careful in his remarks so he could never be caught in a boldfaced lie and impeached, whereas Dump lies constantly with impunity and so far is getting away with it

(7,520 posts)Trump is completely full of himself, and has no problem steamrolling over people who don't share his worldview. He's got the Patrick Bateman 1980s sense of business and (likely) personal philosophy in that if he doesn't need you, and you can't benefit him in some way, there's no reason to keep you around. He enjoys getting the upper hand on people.
Trump says horrible things and doesn't give a shit. He is used to no consequences and has won the lottery in as far as he thinks he can do anything he wants and probably will be allowed to do so.

(64,931 posts)As bad as * was he had connections that allowed him to let the unthinkable happen and then lie us into a war, which today is still resonating in the middle east. tRump is an unknown quantity. He may be far worse than *, though on the other hand nothing may happen, if he cannot get consensus on anything. To add, I do not think he is legitimate, but unfortunately it looks like we will be stuck with him. My concern is that the social progress that has been made over the last eight years could be wiped out in a matter of months, including all of the Supreme Court decisions. An all out assault on what we consider basic human rights.

(4,138 posts)Trump has a bunch of (politically improbable) soundbites, a "throw the bums out" attitude, and has demonstrated little evidence that he's willing to put in the actual work of being President. Not to mention a pretty hostile relationship with even the Republicans in Congress.
I think he'll be like Jesse Ventura's governorship once he figures out that he can't just order people around, and that his days will be filled with people hounding him for decisions 24/7.
He'll still be plenty damaging due to incompetence, and as a rubber stamp to a Republican Congress, but I don't think he has the ability to actually implement very many of his more extreme notions.
