(14,944 posts)Snowing here in upstate NY. Supposed to get 8 -12" where I am. Followed by a wintry mix and freezing rain. It will be a skating rink here too.

(15,805 posts)Portland (Oregon) was paralyzed on Wednesday with a mere inch of snow in many places. The air was already cold and the ground somewhat moist when the snow started, which meant ice underneath the little bit of snow. Hit during early rush hour, as everyone in the city left at the same time to try to outrun the storm. Schools let out at their usual time.
I'd left hours before so I was safe at home. My youngest took 30 minutes to drive home from school- it's a five minute drive. He was lucky. Folks were stuck in traffic that went nowhere for hours on end. 6, 7 hour commutes.
I watched as car after car ended up off the road in front of my house. I live on a hilly S curve and my property takes up a good portion of the curve. We had seven cars get stuck (only 3 overnight and two still there, several days later.) Our road was the only road open at one point that connected one part of town to a good sized state highway. It was still a poor choice for many drivers to make.
Driving around yesterday was amazing. So many cars stuck in ditches all over. One intersection down the road had close to 20 cars stuck. It's a two lane road.
Be safe. Don't drive. http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2016/12/cars_from_incredible_portland.html#incart_river_mobile_home

(18,868 posts)But I don't have to go out for another six hours. The sanders will get to a lot of the road by then. I hope. The main roads will be ok. It is my subdivision that is the problem.
We have some snow coming but not much.
Sounds like it's a lot better here than other places.

(13,390 posts)The salt trucks were held up behind people running off the road, etc. and some of the kids didn't get home from school until like 10 pm because it was too slippery for the buses to risk it. It's a mess!

(34,845 posts)I stopped for gas there and it took about an hour to get off Hwy 63 for the gas. All told, it took me 12 hours to drive my daughters for what is normally a 3 hour trip. We saw 20-30 wrecked cars along the way. We couldn't get off 70E because traffic was at a complete standstill at different parts. The radio said everyone should get off the highway so responders could reach the wrecks.
It was an interesting adventure last night.

(18,868 posts)That highway north to Smithville gets really bad in bad weather.
But it doesn't look like we will have much snow.

(25,927 posts)that similar conditions exist presently in NE Ohio. Doesn"t matter whether it's 1/16" or 2" - it sucks. I had the distinct displeasure of slippy-sliding to work this morning, and I can only hope the temp rises enough to melt the ice, but I expect mid-40s won't be sufficient to overcome pavement chilled by a couple days of air temps in the teens & single digits.

(18,868 posts)And will drop clear down to minus numbers by tonite. Bad wind chill coming. Like -20. I hate these storms and we sways get a couple in December and January.
Good news is that Xmas week looks pretty good. It will be in the 40'same. Just have to stay alive today and tomorrow. Try not to wreck my car.

I got home from 'Nam in october of '70. Its started raining and freezing for the next two winters here. Look out the window and it would look normal then step out the door and be on my ass right now. I hated it.
