(58,785 posts)not one considered by most to be an actual illness. More of a disorder. Like Trump's but less disabling.
They HAVE been corrupted by mind-benders who have encouraged them over the past 40 years to abandon traditional political ideology and adopt more and more extreme replacement ideology. The one overriding belief most share is that the Democrats must be stopped.
Studies in psychology have shown again and again that "normal" people can and do become extremists by association with increasingly extreme ideas and groups. The groups themselves typically also become more and more extreme. We are living the result of feeding a receptive population increasingly extreme beliefs over decades.
For many, those beliefs are rock hard by now. They long ago adopted basic frames of belief that are wholly or partially false, and on those bases over the years have built whole belief structures of lies piled on lies.
When they read a respected journal that contradicts those basic frames, just like any of us, they have no need to read further--they KNOW the article is false and the journal corrupt. Just as any of us would if we started to read an article explaining the detailed machinations by which the Clinton had over 60, and perhaps twice that many, people murdered.
It would literally take professional counseling to bring most of them back to reality. And they don't want to be brought back. But they're not mentally ill.

(58,785 posts)is the enemy that threatens to destroy their nation. And, boy, are we in trouble! We now know that they have not hit bottom with Trump.
Prosperity and emotional security are the big weapons against this kind of thinking, and I was that what two more Democratic terms building on what Obama had started would put us in a far better place and the populist resentments would lose power. Instead, it will be very different, and we'll have to fight it differently. In our favor at least, they have become not only our but their own worst enemies.

(58,785 posts)day after tomorrow? The electors will be meeting in all 50 states, and in all of the people like us will be gathered outside to make our feelings about this election known. Like the several days of peaceful but angry protests in the streets after election day, this is another opportunity to make a strong, principled statement that this is a corrupted election that does not represent the majority will.

I used to have patients spew their vitriol during an exam. I moved to the blue bubble for good. I don't have that problem anymore.

I consider them willfully ignorant at best and vile proud bigots at worst.

(96,882 posts)This is a serious point; if we hope to win back Obama supporters who switched to Trump (and they exist), disputing them all as deluded bigots isn't the way to do it.

(3,496 posts)And that ignorance and fear manifest as hate.
They are reactionaries who fear change, diversity, and dissent.
Trump supporters are not to be confused with Trump voters, of course where the latter are ignorant, capricious, and foolish; indeed, many didnt particularly like Trump or support his positions, but they disliked Clinton more, their vote for Trump was subjective and emotional.
hfojvt
(37,573 posts)as are some Hillary supporters and Obama supporters.
Probably lots of people who voted for him and support him, do not really "idolize" him.
As for the "dark side". Well if you consider the "other wrestler" to be a bad person, you don't mind too much when your guy does what he has to do to win,
Are there lots of Americans with mental illnesses? Sometimes I think that the whole planet is nothing more than an interstellar lunatic asylum. Of course, in this theory, I am one who was mis-classified, put here by mistake, maybe a clerical error. It should have been hfojWt instead of hfojVt. So I yell out to the sky "I don't belong here. I'm not crazy!!"
Then I think, well if I am not crazy, then why am I screaming at the sky?
I tell you, there is nothing worse than seeing a beautiful theory destroyed by a barrage of cruel facts.

(22,976 posts)Trump's a magnet for the unbalanced.
Perpetual rage has screwed up their neurotransmitters. They just have so much to hate: liberals, gays, education (higher education in particular), Muslims, women, Hispanics, African Americans, non-christians, Democrats, "Hollywood types," the "liberal media," on and on. Trump supporters are *always* angry in ways inappropriate to the situation. They are paranoid, seriously concerned about "FEMA camps" and having their weapons confiscated. They are land-locked and howling at the moon.
Notice how those who come unglued publicly start screaming that they voted for Trump, as if that fact were some kind of magic weapon. In a Starbucks, on a plane, on a bus...these events *have* happened. Many more will. Many incidents have been violent, or have that vibe hanging in the air. NONE of this constitutes healthy behavior.

(13,390 posts)Mental illness is common among the 20% of disabled people. It' equal opportunity.
As a matter of fact, if there is a contrast in support, it is probable that people with mental illness lean towards Democrats because they know who supports funding their needed services. Other than the usual influences, there is no RW organization trying to convince those of us who are disabled otherwise.

(40,688 posts)Stuffed to the gills with anti-psychotics and other powerful meds it was as if Trump appeared before us naked and small.
No, you are wrong, kentuck, the majority of Trump supporters are not mentally ill. They are simply mean, ignorant, and afraid. Racism and misogyny play a big role too.
It's no help that 40% of U.S. Americans are fascists, trained to accept punishment and raised to respect "authority," even authorities that are clearly rotten, from church alter, to police department, to the Senate and the Presidency.
We live in a nation that would have quickly folded to Nazi Germany had we been within easy reach of the Nazi war machine.
There's a scene in Amazon's "The Man in the High Castle" where a State Trooper in a Nazi American flyover state notes the human ashes falling like snow as he's checking travel papers. He casually remarks that the world is a better place without the misfits.
In that Nazi dystopia Trump voters would not be among the misfits, would not be considered mentally ill. Nor are they in this dystopia we find ourselves in.
