This fecker. Duterte. Remember Noriega?

President Rodrigo Duterte threatened Saturday to terminate a pact that allows U.S. troops to visit the Philippines, saying "bye-bye America" as he reacted with rage to what he thought was a U.S. decision to scrap a major aid package over human rights concerns.

A U.S. government aid agency, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, said earlier in the week that its board deferred a vote on a renewal of the development assistance package for the Philippines "subject to a further review of concerns around rule of law and civil liberties." ...

"I understand that we have been stricken out of the Millennium Challenge. Well, good, I welcome it," Duterte said with apparent sarcasm.

"We can survive without American money," he said....

In November, Duterte said he wanted U.S. troops out of his country in the next two years.

"I want in the next two years, to be freed from the presence of foreign military troops. I want them out," Duterte told reporters Nov. 1. "And if I have to revise or abrogate agreements, executive agreements, I will." ...

While calling Americans "sons of b------" and "hypocrites," Duterte praised China as having "the kindest soul of all" for offering what he said was significant financial assistance. "So, what do I need America for?" he asked.

The imperialistic chinese". And then 8mo-A yr later, "get out, USA. You can't tell us what to do. If I want to slaughter 3,000 people without due process in the name of drug control doesn't mean I am crazy. You and the UN need to mind your own business. I have a new BFF now. The Chinese are nice".

I don't understand his popularity over there. And after that little whiplash spectacle, I really don't want to hear any crying when China takes over those Islands. The Philippines is on a very dark path. they bought the same bullshit marketing that Donald Trump sold.

Trump is supposed to have Duterte visit next year. Demagogues stick together.

Just heard him whining about how we cut their financial aid. Maybe he thinks Trump will give him money. Bwahahaha!

I grew up in the Philippines, and from what I can see this was the freest and fairest election the Filipinos have had since WW2. Voters rightly saw the political structure in both Parties as corrupt and ineffectual and (like Donald trump) voted for someone different.

FWIW, notwithstanding his extrajudicial anti-crime tactics, there's no indication of personal corruption or benefit by Duterte, in comparison to the alternatives.

Corruption, the question remains whether macchiavellian tactics are acceptable. 6,000 deaths later, is this tactic acceptable? Is it okay to kill first and then ask questions later? Where do individual rights lie in a society like this? Where do we draw the line?

because I approve of how the US took them out, but because it's a fact that the US did. Very publicly. Under Republican presidents.

Donald Trump is just itching, just itching, to order an attack somewhere.
He's loaded up his cabinet with generals.
He's apparently always had this an inferiority complex after going to military school but not having actually served in uniform.
And he's got little hands.

Noriega condoned the killing of a couple US servicemen so Acting against him had some justification. We had no right to attack Saddam Hussein. Long long ago nations wisely decided that nations should be sovereign within their borders. Wars because another nation had the wrong religion or acted badly internally cost vastly more than their benefit. Same with Duterte. If he wants us out, fine.

I would support intervention in some cases, but we should understand that usually intervention kills more than it saves. At least a thousand died in our capture of Noriega.

Protestants go to hell so Catholic nations should invade Protestant nations. How did those wars work out?

The suggestion that we should do to Duterte what we did to Noriega would do more harm than good.
