The GOP is at least partially responsible for Putin's kleptocracy
Before the fall of the Soviet Union majorities favored many aspects of the social welfare state that the Communists built. They didn't like the restrictions on personal freedom. Who does?
Instead of assisting the Russians in making a smooth transition we sent over "experts" who counseled them to sell off all their nationalized industries. They sold them to the highest bidders. Instead of the state running business which is communism you have business running the state which is fascism. That's a bit of a crass simplification but that is also what Trump and the Deplorables want for America.
Now the Russians have no welfare state and no freedom. God help us if that's our future.
