The Syrian White Helmets - Humanity at Its Best
Sixty Minutes had a segment on the Syrian Civil Defense organization, better known as The White Helmets. According the TV program the White Helmets were got their start when ordinary Syrian volunteers from many walks of life sought to organize themselves so they could better respond in the aftermath of indiscriminate government bombings and other attacks on the country’s civilian population in rebel held territories. They have grown into an well trained organization almost 3,000 volunteers operating in over 100 Syrian city and villages. They are supported primarily by Western governments.
There is much to as they respond many times day to care for the wounded in the aftermath of Russian and Syrian government bombings. They tend to the wounded and dying and they often have to dig people out of the collapsed remains of their homes and buildings.
The forces of Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin can only be described as evil. They drop hundreds bombs from planes and helicopters on rebel held cities, not necessarily to kill rebel combatants, but on any civilian neighborhood which they do not control, killing civilians indiscriminately. As first The Syrian White Helmets – Humanity at Its Best the White Helmets are themselves at serious risk because a favorite tactic of Russian and Syrian forces is the “double tap”. Like terrorists, they wait until first responders and neighbors gather to tend to the wounded after a bombing and then bomb the area again hoping to kill even more people. This is the very definition of a war crime.
I like to consider myself a strong person emotionally, but tears filled my eyes (as they do now) when White Helmets were shown racing death itself while trying to save a young boy buried in the rubble of his home with only hair of on the top of his head showing. These volunteers, risking death themselves, frantically dug with their bare hands through the concrete pieces and powder to clear the boy’s head before he suffocated. He survived. When they were finally pull the boy from the rubble my heart was filled with an odd mixture of amazement, admiration, relief, and anger for those who would indiscriminately bomb children.
Collectively the White Helmets are given credit for saving the lives of 70,000 people thus far. Many of these volunteers have given their own lives in the process. The group has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Peach Prize. I haven’t looked in to this thoroughly, but if I can find a way to contribute to their cause, I will do so. They put their lives on the line everyday to save other; it’s the least I can do. Please join me if you can.
As for Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin, and those under their command who do their evil bidding, if there is life after death may they forever burn in hell! Everyone in this country should watch this Sixty Minute segment. Donald Trump should be tied to a chair in front of big screen TV with his eyes taped open and be forced to watch this program. Then let him dare to lie to the American people and again praise those angels of evil and death, Assad and Putin. Putin is playing Trump like a violin and everyone in the world except Trump knows it.
