The Obama administration said Thursday it will dismantle the infrastructure of a now defunct controversial Bush-era registry some fear could be resurrected to help track Muslims in America.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesman Neema Hakim said Thursday morning the agency is “removing outdated regulations pertaining to the National Security Entry-Exit Registration Systems program, with an immediate effective date.”

The program, known as NSEERS, was created in 2002 in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. It was designed to track and register non-immigrant males from primarily Arab, Muslim and South Asian counties who entered the United States.

The Obama administration’s Department of Homeland Security in 2011 ended the program’s registrations process, but left the regulatory framework in place.
