*George Washington was very clear in his letter to the Jews he visited in Rhode Island,

explaining that the United States “gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”

And now is a good time to live up to that promise, to light a candle in the darkness.'

George Washington did own slaves and in his will he gave instructions that they should be freed after Martha's death. He did not free them immediately because, his will explained, some of his slaves were married to Martha's slaves, and, additionally, he was concerned that Martha should not be without sufficient servants. Martha survived him by a little more than two years.
