New York Historical Society To Preserve Thousands Of Post-It Notes Mourning Trumps Election

The project, called “Subway Therapy,” is a powerful, crowdsourced portrait of the city’s emotional state.

“Don’t give up ― stand up.” “Be kind.” “Respect and protect civil rights.” These are some of the messages scrawled across Post-It notes, that, until last week, were plastered to the walls of New York’s Union Square subway station.

The messages were a result of artist Matthew Chavez’s crowdsourced project Subway Therapy project, which, following the shocking and triggering presidential election, gave New Yorkers a safe space to vent, empathize, connect, and heal ― the subway.

Passersby were invited to scrawl their thoughts, hopes, and fears onto a pastel-colored note and stick it among the sea of other pastel-colored squares rapidly coating the walls. Approximately 20,000 sticky notes have been made thus far.

Last week The New-York Historical Society announced its plans to archive some of the Post-It notes, a massive snapshot of the emotional state of the city following Donald Tump’s election.

I have noticed people's kindness, drawing strength from each other. Small ways, yet it begins. A smile a nod, a thank you. There are good people out there. So many of us traumatized, yet the smallest act of kindness is welcomed. I give all that I can and unsolicited I have received the same. It is like a group hug that the survivors of this election are giving each other as they pass by.

Watch over them and they will also be watching over you. It won't be easy, I know that. Hold on tight.

Hugs to you all.

I do believe there is more kindness in the world than hatred and anger. The latter is just so loud it drowns out the soft and peaceful gestures of kindness, compassion and empathy. In the end, hatred will be consumed by its own fire.

Take care, sheshe. to you!

This is really cool and Trumps "legacy" started with sorrow and fear. We will never unite behind hatred.

It has been small things, have you noticed any? I was in the grocery store, I was on tiptoes trying to get something on the top shelf a guy came over and asked if I needed help. He took it down for me. There have been more.

We need to help each other.
