My advice, if you made that break, and feel bad about it now that the Christmas family reunion is over, is to remember that the Trump thing wasn't the only thing. It's just a final big thing.
Best to all in 2017!

(182,788 posts)The in-laws are Dems. I thought I'd get a break tonight from "entertaining" before I had to go to my folks place (Fox News brainwashed) tomorrow. We are spending one night there. I have a holiday break because of my work but I wasn't expecting to spend more than 1/2 of it either with people in my house or at someone else's.
Thanks for letting me vent.

(3,547 posts)isn't just because of the election, though it does play a role.
Dad is a die hard Conservative, who likes Trump. And he loves to gloat about how Trump "won".
But we're also Canadian, so though it certainly does matter, emotions are probably not nearly as raw as with our American "cousins" this year.

(82,383 posts)I think we finally convinced them that it's rude to talk politics at a family function. It was always the right wingers who brought it up.
There are more distant family I unfriended on Facebook and don't plan to talk to or see again, but then I didn't much before. Also unfriended an acquaintance who posted a Rush Limbaugh meme. That person is not going to become a friend.

(2,857 posts)He said Merry Christmas. That's all I've heard from him since probably August. You're right though. The election was FAR from the only thing. He treated my kids like crap when they were the ones offering to take him to his Dr appointments while he tried to buy my brothers kids. Crappy Trump supporters every one.
Christmas was very peaceful this year.

(269 posts)because the break happened over a month ago. It STARTED because they don't approve of my "over the top" Liberal ideologies. I'm pretty weird for believing in all people being equal under the law... but we're living in a day in age where equality is considered radical. My parents think that's ok as long as you're not Muslim or gay. They're less frigid about people of colour, although it depends on what news is coming out of Detroit. And whether or not they're fired up about immigration, or which politician said the right or wrong thing.
Both are die hard Trump fans. And it's the weirdest thing to me, because both of them are struggling lower middle class people. I find this attraction to soulless capitalism and the "fuck the mooching poor" attitude to be a really frustrating paradox. Being Canadian, they don't mind socialism when it comes to healthcare or tax credits... and one voted for Trudeau and the other wanted the NDP in our last election??!?!?!?!?? But one is about as deep as a puddle when it comes to politics and only really stays "informed" via sensational headlines. The other... is into the FEMA camp conspiracy theory and truly believed that Obama had a plan to round up all the Republicans and send them off to internment camps.
We don't talk politics or religion... well, not by my choice anyway. Because it always ends in disaster.
So it all boiled over last time one of them visited me and decided Thanksgiving dinner would be a great time to talk about Trump and go on a tirade against Muslims. My differing opinion turned into secret meetings about the state of my mental health, and then total abandonment for "continuing to believe the things I do" and for "not honouring my roots." We haven't spoken since.
So I was off the hook way before Christmas. Which is good, because I could not have sat through 2 or 3 days of the smug "Told you so" lectures. I would have been drunk to cope, and then shit would have hit the fan LOL.
