Lax American gun laws make it easy for criminal gangs to get their hands on lots of firepower. The gun lobby perceives this story as a threat, because people might call for stricter regulations on sales, purchases, and transfers, so they change the focus of the media story. Or at least that's my conspiracy theory; the recent post about how the NRA influenced the Holder contempt vote seems to indicate so, as does the bizarre RW focus on the issue.
