'Alt-right' groups will 'revolt' if Trump shuns white supremacy, leaders say

Related: Donald Trump's 'alt-right' supporters express dismay at disavowal

The prospect of such disillusion and internecine squabbling may console liberals who fear a White House tinged with racism and quasi-fascism. All the more reassuring because it comes from far-right influencers and analysts, not wishful progressives.

Instead of enjoying proximity to power, according to this analysis, vocal parts of the loose coalition known as the “alt-right” could remain on the political fringe, wondering what happened to their triumph.

“Their hearts are bigger than their brains,” said Mark Weber, who runs the Institute for Historical Review, an organisation dedicated to exposing “Jewish-Zionist” power. “Saying they want to be the intellectual head of the Trump presidency is delusional.”

Jared Taylor, a white supremacist who runs the self-termed “race-realist” magazine American Renaissance, said the president-elect had already backpedalled on several pledges that had fired up the far-right. “At first he promised to send back every illegal immigrant. Now he is waffling on that.”

David Cole, a self-proclaimed Holocaust revisionist and Taki magazine columnist, envisaged the movement sliding into bickering and in-fighting, stuck in “rabbit warrens” of online trolling rather than policy shaping.

or you're being intentionally disingenuous. Nobody is saying every Trump supporter can be reached. We're saying we need to reach some of them. It's really sad that you think constructing such an obvious strawman and then knocking it down looks like a victory.

If you think every Trump supporter is a member of the alt-right, you need to provide some actual evidence.

that those who voted for Dump were either a) unconscious; b) forced at gunpoint; or c) well aware that he is racist, misogynist, anti-LGBT, xenophobic dictator wanna be. He certainly made no secret of it, nor did his more vocal supporters.

If it's a), there's little hope for them. If they can't pay attention and sleepwalk through an election, there's no use trying to "reach" them. Maybe the gunpoint ones are reachable, but I have a funny feeling there's few of those. As for the c) people, they're beneath contempt. Of those few who gradually awaken from their stupor and find themselves without health care or any kind of safety net, while the jobs Dump promised to "bring back" are nonexistent, most will probably sink into cognitive dissonance and blame Obama, Clinton, the Democratic party--anyone but the Orange Nazi.

Personally, I won't waste my time on any of them. I don't "empathize" with them, I don't care about them, they have nothing but my contempt.

And that's not a strawman.

(not without the help of the FBI and Russians) Trump.

If he thought appeasing these violent racists would gain him something, anything, he would do it no matter how many suffer or die.

For now I assume Mr. Trump sees no way to profit by fulfilling outright the racist positions that he tolerated or espoused during the campaign including the deporting of eleven million of us.

But if someone shows him an advantage to be gained by promoting this agenda, he will do it. In fact, the simple act alone of appointing the most racist member of our government to the position of AG pretty much sums up where we are at.

Very frightening, very.

Trump can ignore his Nazi supporters, because the Nazis will find anything they can latch onto as evidence that Trump really does care for them. Trump will also pose often enough with his hand in the air in a Nazi salute (and he'll be fully aware of what he's doing) to keep them in line. If Trump fails his Nazi fans, he'll just blame it on the PC crowd or Obama or the Jewishes or some other handy scapegoat, and his Nazi groupies will eat it up with a spoon.

It will be up to us to point these things out, because when confronted with Trump's obvious affinities for the Nazis, our good friends in the political media will look like a dog watching a card trick.

forcefully renounce the racists and other bigots that they need to get into power.

As W. B. Yeats says in "The Second Coming, "The best lack all conviction, while the worst /Are full of passionate intensity" (7-8).

The GOP's policies are very unpopular, but their base, the minority of Americans who really love GOP bigotry, are "full of passionate intensity," so they can be counted on to vote in every election, at every level, while those who disapprove of GOP bigotry and kleptocratic rule are lackadaisical about voting and unwilling to unite to resist the GOP takeover.

Trump and the GOP will not renounce their most passionate, dependable voters. Trump will throw the white supremacists a bone--or several-- to keep their support.
