By Ruth Eglash December 27 at 1:47 PM
JERUSALEM Israeli officials fear that a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements as illegal and a barrier to peace could be the start of a wave of international declarations against the country.
Days after the measure was approved, Israels foreign ministry is bracing for what it believes could be another U.N. resolution that would impose parameters on negotiations with the Palestinians.
Such a resolution could come out of a meeting in Paris of some 70 international leaders, scheduled for Jan. 15, an Israeli official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Israeli officials are also concerned that a speech being planned by Secretary of State John F. Kerry, which he could present in Paris or before, will outline the Obama administrations position on a final peace agreement and add fuel to a second resolution.

(6,384 posts)Bibi is riding on popular nationalism and wouldn't think twice if he had to flee to escape prosecution for something illegal he's done.
The nationalists think God commanded the Temple to be built...when there is no such verse anywhere in the Bible, Torah, Talmud, Scrolls dug up, etc.
They also think of Israel's borders under King David....despite the fact they expanded only because the other regional empires were contracting and his expansion was very lackluster because the kingdom itself was constantly in danger due to infighting. Heck, Jerusalem was taken to help legitimize his rule as it belonged neither Israel or Judah, but the Jebusites.... and the populace may have been complicit in his takeover due to bad leadership.... in other words, even Jerusalem wasn't part of Joshua's conquest.
But lets get really dirty, when Titus sacked Jerusalem it was essentially to put down a civil war run by gang-lords. And when the Romans tried to put out the fires that would destroy the Temple, they got attacked.
Like us here in the USA, they believe in a "golden era" that never existed.

(1,629 posts)There's mention of it here.
I'm not the least religious, and I find all these ancient myths and the religions built on them fascinating... but when you say "there's no such verse"... what does that mean? That there's no first person God telling anyone... or that it can never be anything more than second hand... such as in http://biblehub.com/ezra/6-14.htm and therefore that can't be considered a command?
"They finished building the temple according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, kings of Persia."

(6,384 posts)But its not a command to build it.
But 2 Samuel 7, which is earlier than Ezra, God asks rhetorically when did he ever ask for a temple and even seems to reject the idea. Ultimately he does bless the endeavor, but more as a concession.
It's also technically the second temple and Herod's was the third as he had to basically tear down the old one to build a larger and more "grand" temple. But don't tell a fundie that, they'll go nuts. Or for that matter a deeply orthodox Jew, they'll go red in the face and say it was "remodeled". The thought of a converted half Edomite whose only legit claim to the throne was that he married a Maccabee princess is responsible for the last Temple doesn't quite sit well with some.
There is actually more instruction and direct command on how to build the Tabernacle than there is the temple.
Its ironic, but the temple treasury is what ultimately made it a tempting target and being stationary, an easy one. Had they stuck with the Tabernacle, they could have easily moved away during foreign invasions.

(7,283 posts)the US and Canada give to Israel. Israel freely gives us the middle finger and still we send them aid, if they're so viable then they should be able to stand on their own two feet. They want to function as an apartheid state and we shouldn't be financing such inhumanity.
