have to confront the reality that America is being run by a person who is completely untrustworthy and unpredictable.

Decisions, by other countries, may need to be made about whether or not we should have nuclear weapons, at all.

103. What's ironic was that ultra-orthodox did not want the creation of the State of Israel ...

... during that time. It was secular Jews who were the vanguard for the realization of Zionism.

Now, the roles are reversed. Many secular Jews like myself are calling for a binational state, whereas the religious zealots want to expand the State of Israel's borders.

Full circle, we've come.

72. Israel is the Jewish state

Consider their citizenship qualification process

Law of Return

The Law of Return grants all Jews the right to immigrate to Israel and almost automatic claim Israeli citizenship upon arrival in Israel. In the 1970s the Law of Return was expanded to grant the same rights to the spouse of a Jew, the children of a Jew and their spouses, and the grandchildren of a Jew and their spouses, provided that the Jew did not practice a religion other than Judaism willingly. In 1999, the Supreme Court of Israel ruled that Jews or the descendants of Jews that actively practice a religion other than Judaism are not entitled to immigrate to Israel as they would no longer be considered Jews under the Law of Return, irrespective of their status under halacha (Jewish religious law).

73. It may look and sound strange,

Last edited Wed Dec 28, 2016, 05:16 PM - Edit history (1)

but used with a form of the verb "have," it is correct, LOL.

http://snarkygrammarguide.blogspot.com/2012/09/swam-vs-swum-dont-be-afraid-of.html

Swim, swam, swum is similar to shrink, shrank, shrunk; begin, began, begun; drink, drank, drunk; sink, sank, sunk; and a handful of other irregular verbs.

Swum is a participle used in the present perfect and past perfect tenses, to emphasize that an event has either recently been completed (present perfect, with 'have') or completed in the distant past (past perfect, with 'had').

84. "Drag" is a regular

verb. So its correct past and past participle forms are both "dragged."

Apparently, some incorrectly use "drug" as a past tense in some parts of the country and it is "accepted." But the correct grammatical form is "dragged."

The statement reads like this: "I have climbed ..., swum ..., and piloted ...." The initial "have" is applicable to and used with the participles of the verbs following. Both "climb" and "pilot" are regular verbs. "Swim" is an irregular verb, which is why its participle "swum" sounds somewhat jarring.

Sorry, an early incarnation as an English teacher occasionally resurfaces.

93. That's the problem.

I've heard "swum" used as simple preterite. It's non-standard, but a lot of strong verb paradigms are in a kind of flux in the US.

In the OP the auxiliary's ellipted and so the bare past participle has the feel of a preterite.

(Of course, were it the preterite, it would be infelicitous on other grounds, but we're more forgiving of tense-sequence screw ups than botched verbal morphology.)

12. Well, there is no politician I have ever respected as much as Secretary Kerry .. and he is right.

Schumer is dishonest in his objections -- which really are as basic as they are not what Israel wants. The fact, Netanyahu is acting against his own stated value that he favors a two state solution. He likely told the truth shortly before the last election when he said there would be no 2 state solution while he was PM -- then took it back after he won. Netanyahu lied one of those two times.

It would be interesting to know what Schumer actually believes in on the basic issues. He has to have opinions.

Something I have been far from shy about here, stretching back to 2004.

And his recent actions only confirm my extreme distaste.

This is obviously Kerry's last hurrah, but I hope that our strong leaders and actual friends of Israel like Senator Schumer work so that the people behind this travesty in our own government become so toxic that they are excluded from future Democratic administrations.

Pigs is used as an insult against Muslims, police officers and countless other folks. Its not some special slur reserved for those of Jewish ancestry.

119. If you objected to it, you don't understand it.

If Israel attempts to implement a single state solution with the Palestinians within its borders, it has to be an autocratic religious state in order to remain Jewish. Otherwise, if it attempts to be a Democracy, it will have to give those Palestinians within its borders the right to vote and they will vote and they will vote for the state to not be Jewish.

Kerry's statement wasn't just right and it wasn't just elegant and philosophical, it ends up being a test for who will knee-jerk themselves into not understanding it because they are so biased they can't sit still long enough to think about it.

I feel pretty confident that no one is listening to anything that anyone is saying. Well, maybe not 'no one', but the vast majority are just waiting for their turn to "talk at" the other side.

33. We missed out on a great President :(

Clearly he's speaking to the international community, not the nimwit 'Murkins in this country. We are going to have to rely on Europe to be the parents in this situation.

I would argue that Kerry has been one of the best Secretaries of State in the modern era. He has navigated so many political landmines with grace, strength, and conviction. He is well-respected across the globe.

It makes me ill to think of who and what will follow him.

75. My take too

I asked myself after listening to this excellent speech, who he was really talking to -- clearly to Israel, the international community. True, he may harbor a hope, but not expectation, that Trump's team would maybe listen and learn something. It might be to speak to Democrats, who in a time of fear because of this election and others are so chicken they are backing Netanyahu over Obama - even as Netanyahu, seems increasingly out of control.

I think though he is also speaking to history, to his values, from his conscience as well as his heart. I will miss having this eloquent, compassionate man, who really does have a heart and conscience that both guide his work.

Yes, it is his swan song as Secretary ... but, like both Obama and Loretta Lynch, he has said that he will continue to speak out on things that are important to him. It is worth noting that he was an activist (on both the war and environment) before he ran for office. I look forward to seeing these three "unrestrained" as Obama said referring to himself.

It looks like the whole of the Obama administration is still working away during this supposed holiday vacation period, including the POTUS, who keeps signing EOs and commutations while the opposition at DU complains about his choice of golf venue in his home state.

Damn I am going to miss them all.

86. Yep, Danon is an execrable character

I can only think that Netanyahu appointed him to the UN job as a big 'f**k you' to the UN/the rule of international law.

from 2012:

Danon, a deputy speaker of the Israeli Knesset and chairman of World Likud, has come under fire for describing African migrants in Israel as a “national plague,” for hosting controversial U.S. TV personality Glenn Beck at the Knesset and for demanding government investigations of left-wing NGOs.

He wants Israel to annex all the Jewish-occupied and uninhabited land in the West Bank. He wants Palestinians living on the remainder of the West Bank to become part of Jordan, Egypt to take control of the Gaza Strip and the international community to reject the establishment of a Palestinian state on the west bank of the Jordan River (it’s fine by him if the Palestinians take over the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on the east bank). Danon does not believe in land for peace or the two-state solution.

“I’m working very hard to present a different approach for the peace process,” Danon told JTA in a recent interview in his Knesset office. “Our goal should be to annex the maximum land with the minimum Arab population,” he said of the West Bank. “We should speak about our rights and not apologize for it. We have biblical rights, historical rights, rights according to international law. We also have common-sense rights: We won the war.”

70. This was a classic speech

by Kerry. In many ways, I am sorry that it wasn't given sooner.

But it HAD to be said and he said it well. After Jan 20, Trump will do everything Netanyahu and his "Greater Israel" coalition ask - and we'll all be the worse for it.

The following document pertaining to the formation of “Greater Israel” constitutes the cornerstone of powerful Zionist factions within the current Netanyahu government, the Likud party, as well as within the Israeli military and intelligence establishment.

In recent developments, Donald Trump has confirmed his support of Israel’s illegal settlements and his opposition to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which confirms the illegality of the Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

78. Sadly, I think Israel will be the worse for it too -- even as they get everything they want from

Trump. The fact is that the respect other countries had for the entire Obama administration allowed them the ability to advocate for Israel and to moderate various reactions. This was not based on US threats or fear the US would be angry, but a genuine respect when the US said that doing that would be helpful.
