Canadian man punches cougar in the face to save his dogReuters
The incident occurred in a wooded area near a fast food chain in Whitecourt, central Alberta, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said on Wednesday.
William Gibb, 31, from Red Deer, Alberta, had stopped at a Tim Hortons outlet on his 372-mile drive to Grand Prairie on the evening of 26 December and had let his dog out for a walk, Whitecourt RCMP Sgt Tom Kalis said.
He punched the cougar, yelled at it and got it to release the dog. Then he called the police, Kalis said. He was quite lucky.
Take that, cougars.

That he's a part time Zamboni driver at the local hockey rink and has been arrested multiple times for Maple Syrup Rustling, a felony in Canada.
But I kid our neighbors to the north.

(12,775 posts)Most cougars would have run off and gone somewhere else looking for prey.
In California, most mountain lion attacks occur from sick, young or starving animals.
Older, healthier ones may stalk, but they don't want to get into fights over or with what they might consider prey, and they'll shift their territory to follow the migrations of the prey they normally hunt.

(18,124 posts)I am disgusted that the only solution was to kill the cougar. Human beings are so fucking kill crazy.

(1,107 posts)I've listened to the "kill crazy" people. There is something wrong with them. Always amazed that in my area they primarily come the "Culture of Life" group. They just seem to be obsessed with taking the life from other beings.
In this case something was wrong with that cougar and unless you're willing to live in a neighborhood with a predator like that on the prowl I find it unseemly for you to criticize their action. Imagine getting up every morning and wondering whether it's safe to allow your elementary school age children to walk to school, put your pets out in the back yard or even have an elderly relative out working in their yard. Sorry, sometimes go wrong with animals (as well as people). We lock up the people (or kill them, another discussion for another time) but locking up that cougar would have been crueler than killing it.

(21,889 posts)The food chain was definitely involved. If the cougar had been quicker, it would have been a true fast food chain.

(1,107 posts)In the 20 years we've had our farm I've had two face to face encounters with cougars. Both at a distance of 100ft or so, these are very intimidating animals and not to be take lightly at all. We've got a pair of Great Pyrenees who look out after us and our livestock. We try not to mess with the indigenous life forms and so far we've been fortunate that they have chosen to leave us alone.
I was disappointed that the other husky didn't come to the aid of his partner, but they did look kind of young in the video. My guys work together and if one of them gets into something, the other one is right there. Normally this is a good thing but the morning of the porcupine encounter, well that's another story for another time.
The way our winter is going, Jan/Fed may be tough, extended periods of way below seasonal average temps thus far may lead to real hunger and boldness on our local predators part, we'll see.
Hope I don't get into any situation like that young man. He was correct in the video, something had gone wrong with that cougar and it would have presented a real danger to the community. He's also right in his observation that they are magnificent creatures and it's never a joyful time when one needs to be dispatched.
