Dem Senator Wont Attend Obama Meeting to Save Obamacare: I Just Cant, In Good Conscience

This guy really sucks. OK Schumer now is a chance for some leadership on your part with this guy.

Democratic West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Wednesday that he would not attend a meeting with outgoing president Barack Obama to discuss stopping Republican efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare, calling it counterproductive.

Host Joe Scarborough asked if Manchin planned to attend the Wednesday meeting.“No, I’m not. I just can’t, in good conscience, I can’t do it,” he said. “If anyone listened and paid attention to what the American people said when they voted, they want this place to work.”

“With all of the respect of all of these people involved, but we had the outgoing president coming up here to talk to only Democrats, we have the incoming vice president coming up to talk only to Republicans. Joe, that’s not what makes this place work and that’s really what is wrong with the place,” he argued

“I think it’s absolutely wrong…” concluded Manchin, denouncing those in both parties with hard-line stances on the law. “I’m willing to look at replacing, repealing, doing everything that we can to make it better.”

Manchin is up for reelection in two years.

He has got to be doing some serious thinking of what to do about it?

Does he try to win his seat with that electorate?

Does he switch parties and win by 40 %?

Does he retire and do something else?

He has to be doing a lot of thinking right now.

That comment will be an albatross around the neck of any and all WV Democratic candidates in 2018.

Manchin's job is to represent the voters of WV. We have a choice of Manchin who will support many Democratic priorities or a conservative Republican who will not support any. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warrens are not about to win statewide elections in WV any time soon.

Wed Jan 4, 2017, 01:20 PM

First he sponsored a gun control bill and people protested at his office here in WV. Anytime there is an article about him in the local media the comments section is full of trolls talking about how he is a liberal gun grabber. WV gun rights groups and sportsmans groups send me emails all the time reminding me he is a gun grabber. That is pretty much a death sentence in WV for a politician.

Second as governor he was very conservative so almost no liberals support him.

Third as governor he was really awful to state employees and I know very few WV State employees who voted for him.

Fourth he helped elect a republican governor over liberal Charlotte Pritt because he was pissed she beat him in the primary.

Fifth as gov he cut several business taxes that really blew a hole in the budget now that coal revenues are down, and the now republican legislature refuses to raise any revenue which is screwing the state.

Manchin appealed to voters who either didn't like him or were lukewarm to him, and at the same time he went out of his way to piss off voters who were for him.

That said, he's way better than any republican who would replace him and Schumer and the dems should do anything they can to keep his seat.

Congress
CEO at center of EpiPen price hike controversy is Sen. Joe Manchin’s daughter

The growing congressional scrutiny of pharmaceutical giant Mylan over the high cost of EpiPens could prove awkward for Sen. Joe Manchin.

The West Virginia Democrat’s daughter, Heather Bresch, is chief executive of the company, which appears to have hiked the price of the epinephrine auto-injector by 400 percent since 2007. The device, which is used to treat severe allergic reactions, now costs more than $600 per dose.

[U.S. lawmakers demand investigation of $100 price hike of lifesaving EpiPens]

This price increase has become a public relations disaster for Mylan and at least four of Manchin’s Senate colleagues are either pressing the company to reduce the cost of EpiPens, asking it to explain the price increase or requesting federal regulators to investigate the matter. Manchin is not a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has shown the most interest in probing Mylan’s pricing practices, and so far the senator is not discussing the issue.

“Right now we don’t have any comment,” Manchin spokesman Jon Kott said in an email Tuesday.

He is not a member of the Party, no matter how popular he may be with some people. However, Manchin was indeed freely chosen as the candidate for Senate in a WV Democratic primary and then won his seat in a free and fair election.

However, you decision not to support the team is unsurprising as the Democratic Party is not socialist. In fact, there is an American Socialist Party where you would probably find more common ground.

That said, I've been following bourgeois politics in the US for 50 years or so and when I've voted, I've voted Democratic. I've NEVER voted for a Republican. NEVER! Not even Reagan when all those right wing Democrats (like Manchin) were bamboozled by him to the point where they were actually CALLED "Reagan Democrats".

I've been commenting on this forum since 2009 or 2010, not because I'm a Democrat, but because I'm left-wing. And this place USED to be more flexible to left-wing views than it has become lately. IOW, the "Underground" part of it was emphasized more than it apparently is today. In fact, I would say that the "Underground" part was what made this forum popular, NOT the "Democratic" part.

I post here because left-wing Democrats are just future Bolsheviks who still have illusions in capitalism.

and the overall state electorate right?

Sanders got 124,700 votes. Trump got 156,249 votes. Trump won the state by 42%. Do you really think that the reason they voted for Trump was because Sanders wasn't in the GE? In the last 5 elections, the best we've done is losing by 6 with a virtual neighbor. Other than that, we've lost by 12.9, 13.1, 26.8, 42.1.

For the record, Manchin voted with the party about 75% of the time. The closest Republican Senator voted with the Democratic party about 27% of the time. I may not like some of Manchin's votes, it's really just objectively wrong to say that he's "perfectly happy to help the GOP guy our programs and government" unless he's really bad at it.

Well, they DO . . . they're just called Blue Dog Democrats now. In other words, Joe Manchin.

Reason and dialogue got tossed out around about Sarah Palin's popularity and it's been getting uglier ever since.

Lest we forget it was two DEMOCRATS (DINOs, to be fair) that spearheaded the kibosh on the Public Option. If that were to pass, you'd never hear about Republicans ever again. Trust me; they'll deny it to the hilt, but there would be than a few million Trumpkins who would have been pleased as punch with a Public Option.

But hey, Baucus and Lieberturd had to throw a bone to Big Insurance and their Republican friends.

But it's an argument I don't buy. I believe a true progressive in the mold of Sanders would likely be very competitive in W.Va (and other places) but the Dem establishment repeatedly go for third way- Blue Dog types, who either lose or are always on the verge of switching parties.

Manchin is nothing but an opportunist, trying to save his political ass.

I would rather pick up seats elsewhere than worry about states like this.

74. You think Bernie Sanders would win a general election in West Virginia ?

Part of a 50 state strategy is to find Democrats that represent people of all states, even if it means more conservative Democrats in more conservative states (or districts).

Could we get a true blue progressive in a state like New York? Yes.

West Virginia went 70% for Trump. Any Democrat representing a 70% Trump state should be careful with how he (or she) votes.

to be caught in the same room as President Obama. Why?

Manchin comes across to me as Zell Miller 2.0. Wonder if he will be speaking at the next RNC- as a Republican?

he's going to be a weak link. He can stay for the numbers but otherwise he might as well be a Republican.

when Obamacare is repealed. Their husbands were victims of black lung. One recipient said she was getting $635 monthly from ACA payments.

I wonder how many coal miner widows there are in West Virginia.

The REASON 50% of eligible voters don't bother turning out to vote is because they think there is NO DIFFERENCE between the political parties.

Joe Minchin is EXACTLY the reason they think that! I really hope Trump picks him for a cabinet position.

Replace with WHAT? Tell us wise sir, what the hell do you want to replace it with? Are you on board with the 'don't get sick, don't get old' plan of the Republicans? I hope you go back to WV and tell your constituents that you want to make sure that we go back to the old, failed health care system. They won't be able to get health care except at the emergency room, but for sure the mine owners will, and get a nice tax cut too!
