embarrassing goodbye speech before he got on that helicopter on August 9, 1974.

And every time I see his announcement the night before that he'd be resigning, I'm afraid all over again that when he says, "I'm not a quitter" he'll then go on to declare his intention to stay in office. I recall watching that speech live and being completely convinced he was planning to stay on.

I worked at National Airport at the time, and planes did not board during that time period because EVERYONE wanted to watch the speech. Not a single passenger walked up to our counter during that time. It was quite eerie.

Rachel Maddow said most of them are like 15 minutes long and they are done from the White House and are not such a big deal as this one.

This one was in a huge arena and went on for 53 minutes.

I think we liked this guy.
