but hearing these rightwing assholes scream about fake news now, when they used fake news to "win" the election, is hilarious

I just seemed to pick up on this term in the last few months - maybe just before the Nov election.

I think it is critical to know when this was first coined and who coined the term. My gut tells me that it came from the Trump people. If that is true - do you think that they coined the term in order to use it - if and when - a damning story came out against Trump - so they can claim it is 'fake news'.

They established the concept of 'fake news'. They used it so that the term crept into our daily language and sensitized people to the term and some actual 'fake news'. So now We The People are sensitized to the term - and discredit some news stories because of that - then when a really - again damning - story comes out against Trump - they use the term to deflect and discredit the story.

That's where my head is at tonight - trying to get my arms around this dossier/story and how the Trump people might defend him around this story. Kind of just like he sensitized us to the term the election is 'rigged'.

It will be interesting to see if Trump actually shows up at the Press Conference and it will be more interesting to see how he defends himself when questioned about this breaking news.

heck, before then, too

I think what changed is that now, foreign entities and treasonous rightwing assholes are colluding to create / use / spread fake news to sway elections, because they cannot win on their shitty ideas alone

the term "fake news" seems to have just been popularized as a term as of late. Everybody is saying those two words together now and I've been around for 68 years and only recently been sensitized to its use. Am I alone in this thinking or is there anyone else out there that feels that this term "fake news" is a new addition to our everyday talk?

It is very succinct. Especially when the propaganda is this thick lately with the Trump and his supporters.

Peak week 4-10 Dec (with an arbitrary '100' score); in single figures until 23rd-29th Oct (when it was 10); 17 by 6th-12th Nov; 79 13th-19th Nov.

It was talked about a bit earlier in the year, eg http://www.snopes.com/2016/01/21/6-quick-ways-spot-fake-news/ or http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-35635929

And in early 2015, it was seen as a problem, prompting one of those "newspaper headline questions are always answered with 'no'" moments:

Did Facebook just kill the Web’s burgeoning fake-news industry?
