On the campaign trail last January, President-elect Donald Trump bragged that he could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters.
Today during his press conference, Trump did the rhetorical equivalent to CNN reporter Jim Acosta, and the assembled reporters did nothing.
After Trump attacked CNNs report that top U.S. intelligence officials believe Russian operatives may have compromising information about him, Acosta yelled out, Since you are attacking us, can you give us a question? In an extended back and forth, Trump lashed out at Acostas terrible news outlet.
Im not going to give you a question, Trump said. Im not going to give you a question. You are fake news!
Acosta was left to say that Trump was being inappropriate and sink back in his chair as Trumps supporters clapped.
And the rest of the press apparently did nothing at all. They watched it happen, then moved on to ask their own questions. Rather than deferring to their CNN colleagues until they had an opportunity to speak or trying to ask Acostas question themselves or pushing back against Trumps attack on a media outlet or even walking out, they acted like it hadnt happened.

(32,759 posts)because I was wondering about this when it was happening. If one of them attempted to defer his/her time to Acosta, thus putting him/herself in Trump's crosshairs and losing the chance to break news, would that cost that person his/her job? We're in uncharted waters.

(1,237 posts)What did CNN report that wasn't true? They've stuck with the facts and avoided the unsubstantiated claims.

(17,528 posts)sure they continue getting access to tRump... afraid to ask him about anything that might offend him.

(479 posts)because things have never been this bad. If they continue on this way, Trump will really have a completely free rein to do anything he pleases & this country will lose things like never before & not be able to get them back probably.

(11,243 posts)Reporters are competitive. Bush totally played them against each other by granting best access to only those who produced favorable coverage. But it was subtle. He didn't call the noncompliant press out in public, if I recall, but they didn't get quotes either. So they got more compliant in hoping to get more access and further their careers. How we got into Iraq. That was also when GOP sponsored fake news started. Remember Swift Boat Veterans? Also part of the reason for the decline of traditional media. They blame the internet, etc, but part of it was they started to abdicate their responsibilities and the corporations decided to run after short term profit instead of building value and trust with their regular readers. As a serious consumer of news, I'm not paying for reporting that is the same quality as what I can get on a freakin' blog.
Trump's strategy is the logical conclusion GWB's strategy. Reporters are going along to get along, as usual, acting like crabs in a barrel. To the press, I say, Quit doing the same thing and expecting different results. Band together, protect your profession and stand up for the first amendment instead of whoring after clickbait headlines day after day.

(32,759 posts)Trump has slithered out of answering questions for months and everyone was eager to pin him down on something. On the third hand, deferring their time to Acosta would have put them in the same boat with him. These are crazy times. The press needs to get it together ASAP!

(1,237 posts)They can pretend they were just shocked and taken back, but they knew he would test his power and our press. They rolled over and it's starting to look like an act to weld Trump more control. Lecture the public about the power of the press, then turn every press conference into a donkey show.

(479 posts)& they just sit there like cowardly morons & even let him do what he did to one of their own. Hell, he did that kind of stuff during the primary.
Have never seen such a bunch of cowards who are afraid to the point they refuse to do their job.

Does he realize he won't really be able to do that pretty soon?
