I don't think Trump cares about optics as much as Reagan and Bush did, though.

worst case from the russopublican perspective is that comey actually is charged. he plead to a minimal charge, pays a fine, maybe is barred from holding a government job for five years or something, and is on probation for 1 year. hell, fine, maybe he actually goes to prison for a short stretch.
meanwhile some rich russopublicans shower his family with money and he walks out of prison a millionaire, then milks the book/talk show circuit for millions more, celebrated as a hero among russopublicans and why should he care that democrats hate him.
