What's next for the women's marches?

I attended one with half a million fellow sisters in NYC yesterday. As someone who's worked on campaigns before and organized events, I noticed a few things lacking.

1) No sort of sign-in sheets. These marches were a missed opportunity to stay in touch with future opportunities for activism and making your voices heard. Also a good way to generate leads for donors and volunteers.

2) No immediate action to take. No petitions, fundraising, etc.

3) VOTER REGISTRATION. While most people who are marching are probably already registered to vote, it would still be an opportunity to expand the electorate. I noticed many high school aged girls there who will possibly come of age before the next election. In addition, people move and need to update their registration.

4) No communications of what comes next. The work is far from over, people want to help, but what's next?

1. Crowds were kind of big for that....

at least in the big cities.

Need for the marchers to go home and start doing what you do, organizing locally.

2. In NYC, there was a cluster of portapotties

Right by where the speakers were. There was also a guy selling buttons (why didn't I think of that).

There was enough space for a few tables with information, voter reg forms, etc.

3. It wasn't a campaign. It was a protest march.

Not everything is going to be OWS. What's next? Organize and educate. As always.

4. March to VOTER BOOTHS to end voter suppression and gerrymandering all else is less effective

Without them we can march with a trillion people, the KGOP ignores that... march with votes... they can NOT ignore that

Its was euphoric but it isn't going to change anything unless it happens again and again and again and we change reps minds and lead to more voting.

6. just about every group at our march had sign up sheets (rain did not help that effort tho)

at our 2 booths (dem party LGBTQ + outreach group for homeless youth) we got tons of names/emails. half of them were so poorly written we cant decipher them.

Take these marches down to the level of a gerrymandered district. Make you House Representative work for his next 2 year term.

those inspired by just watching it on CNN.

tell them that they cannot approve Betsy DeVos as Education secretary.

10. They were going to have that but the crowds were too large. They expected 250K

to show up..and we probably doubled that. They wouldn't let us finish at Trashpot Tower either. The main focus was just to keep people moving. I joined in at 49th and 5th and it took a hours to just go the few blocks.

Moore rattled off a whole bunch of organizations that we can join or if we can donate to. It would be helpful to have an action sticky on this forum with important numbers/organizations that we can join to further our cause. But just start with calling.

I've personally seen the calls work time and time again in animal rights cases.

11. You're right. But the clear message I got was sign up and donate. I did both. Again.

And the other message was ANYONE can be an activist. There is a whole spectrum of things you can do.

This is where people need to be accountable. This is not a 1 day event. It is an EVERYDAY event. So I am going to organize a circle of people to be activists. To do what we can do. I hope others do the same.

Maybe they can have a website for people to sign up.

14. Registration in Indy

Several people were walking through the crowd in Indianapolis asking if people were registered or needed to update voter registration info. Great turnout (10,000+) for our red state, and I know many people from the state went to DC as well.

15. On more than one occasion during the speaking portion

At the Washington march announcements were made to the crowd that those interested in joining the movement associated with the Women's March should text 'women' to 40649. You will be asked to submit your email and from there the organizers will send you the plan. The email is [e-mail]. The rest is up to you.

Recommended actions of taking your empowered enthusiasm back to your community and volunteering, running for office and organizing were also strongly encouraged.

I personally joined my local chapter of the Democratic National Committee, the NAACP and am now on the board of a local community non profit. There are many more choices for engagement. I suggest picking a cause close to your heart.

16. Multiply the march impact by moving voter registration

from Republican to Democratic on Monday. Send letters to Republican politicians stating that you have left the party. In future elections, vote your interests -- want healthcare, then vote DEM.
