Worried about a draft? Want to help determine deferements if there is a draft?

Sign up to be a Selective Service volunteer Board Member. "If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 local boards throughout America would decide which young men in each community receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service based on federal guidelines."

I first checked it out during shrub's terms when another duer was encouraging us to do so. What with the state of the new administration, this might be a good thing to consider. They have tried to have a minimal volunteer group to be active if needed while they get others on board if there is a draft. Many places, counties, are short of even that and would be happy to get people on now.

The idea makes me feel sick, but better those of us with sense than rwingers.

The process takes several months, but better sooner than later.

VOLUNTEERS - Board Member Program.

Selective Service wants to hear from men and women in the community who might be willing to serve as members of local boards.

Local boards members are volunteers nominated by state governor or equivalent officials, and appointed by the Director of the Selective Service System on behalf of the U.S. President. They play an important community role closely connected with our nation's defense.

If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 local boards throughout the United States would decide which young men in each community receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service based on federal guidelines.

Board Member Requirements

Must be 18 years old or older
Must be a citizen of the United States
Men must have registered with Selective Service, except those born from March 29, 1957 through December 31, 1959
Must not be a member of law enforcement occupation as defined by Selective Service policy (example: police officer or judge)
Must not be an active or retired career member of the Armed Forces or Reserves or National Guard
Must not have been convicted of any criminal offense

Local and Appeal Boards

A Selective Service local board is a group of five citizen volunteers appointed by the President. They play an important community role closely connected with our nation's defense. If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 local boards throughout America would decide which young men in each community receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service based on federal guidelines.

Application is accepted. There are no openings on my county board at this time, but mine is on file.

Not that I worry much about my county -- bluest of the blue in a blue state -- but I know enough from my paternal grandmother talking about my parent's draft number to not rely on my community to be fair. My parent's family lived in a well-off county then, but one grandparent was a master machinist at an automotive plant, and the other was legally an accountant, plus a mathematician, and thanks to sexism was officially a bookkeeper or computer. They looked very blue collar on paper. Eldest uncle was too young for Korea, and too old by the time the draft ramped up. Middle uncle got and maintained an academic deferment by being at one of the extremely prestigious universities. My parent, the baby... had screwed off during HS, and had a low number. My parent joined the Navy, because the Board would have sent his ass "to straighten him out." While sending their own sons abroad, to university, getting them fictitious disorders...

Never again. If there's a draft, it applies to everyone.

other "evidence" from his own draft dodging ankle event.

As well as a full current medical of that ankle now. Independent doctors panel to examine him.

I'll wager that ankle shows no sign of any previous injury or problem.

We have more chance of seeing his tax returns.

There are other things, like state/fed $ for higher education but the drivers license is a huge thing for many.

There is no draft yet. But in case there is, having right minded people on the boards seems good.
