Anonymous has been promising some big bombshell for months, without result.
Tom Arnold tells us that there's a irredeemably damning tape, but no one can see it.
Democrats are saying that America would be shocked if we knew what they can't tell us.

See the pattern? There seem to be a lot of reassurances that there will come a reckoning, but no one is pulling the trigger. Whether or not Democrats have (or have seen) the scoop, they're demonstrating no greater credibility than Tom Arnold or a YouTuber in a Guy Fawkes mask.

If I turn out to be wrong, and Democrats have a killer surprise in store for Trump, then I'll happily recant. Until then? There's no reason to think that they've got anything up their collective sleeve.

It's not just the congress to decide if they will impeach. It can start in the judiciary. Anyone know if that's true?

I keep hearing it's up to congress solely - like it starts and ends there. But it sounds like there are other avenues to begin it and try to advance it to the house.

And your friend only adds to my belief that Trump and Co and some of the dirtiest, cheating, corrupt mafia we've ever had in Washington. At least in my lifetime.

...but, once already in office? Let's put it this way -- while Pence will be unlikely to, say, impose martial law if he doesn't get his way (not that that's a small consideration), if he becomes president, we can count on the entire Tea Party agenda cemented firmly in place before his term is up, while Trump might be likely to balk at some of their more-extreme items.

Pence will be wounded, and without Trump's ability to grab all the media attention, the media may actually focus on how horrible the actual GOP policies are instead of what outrageous things Trump said or tweeted today or last night.

That said, even though Ford was weakened, he lost a very close election to Carter in 1976.

And, when our Connecticut governor resigned about 10 years ago in the face of impending impeachment, his Lt Governor came in and was able to turn the negativity around 180 and became extremely popular and untouched by her boss' scandals. (the local cartoonist in CT took to drawing her in Snow White clothing)

So, while I would be okay with a wounded President Pence, Democrats would need to kick him while he's down to make sure he doesn't rise again.

Mon Jan 23, 2017, 02:35 PM
Jan 2017

Fellow republi-CONS, many of whom served in the House with him. He's who they really want. AND don't forget, he was able to do tremendous damage to his state with his far-right, my-religion-trumps-your-rights, and anti-LGBTQ moves that passed easily in Indiana and lost millions of dollars in business, corporations moving away, conventions canceling, jobs lost or moved out of state with those defecting companies. He made a huge mess. But he COULD. Because he had the whole infrastructure of a CON state legislature moving in lockstep behind him. Indiana's a blood-red state. We have those same kinds of conditions on Capitol Hill now. A President Mike Pence would have the wind at his back, and he'd likely do far more damage than even trump could. Besides, trump's offended far more people, and Pence has reliably always been around to try to walk it back and smooth things over and clean up the surface imaging.

The only benefit I could see would be that this four-year term would be broken up. Hopefully neither one of 'em could get much accomplished with their time in office truncated and disrupted like this. IMPEACHMENT proceedings would be VERY disruptive and carnivorous. They'd suck all the air out of the room and dominate the headlines for months. Kinda hard to get stuff done when you have a head-wind like that working against you, and more questions to answer about the IMPEACHMENT proceedings than about your so-called agenda. Last time, it kinda ground things in Washington to a halt. The whole Clinton thing, and before that, Nixon. It becomes the Godzilla that eats Manhattan (and beyond).

A hamstrung republi-CON fighting off a scandal so messy that it leads to IMPEACHMENT is a good thing. It can cripple an administration for the duration. And that's a VERY good thing. The more and the longer that trump or trump/pence can be PREVENTED from being up to no good, the better.

Btw - I'm writing IMPEACHMENT in caps again now. To add emphasis and draw attention to it. It'd be nice to see a drumbeat get started. In practicality, we're probably gonna have to wait for the purported "honeymoon" phase to end and the novelty and "let's give the new guy a chance" crap to wear off. So we won't see anything for awhile.

Use Trumpolini to get what they want as fast as they can. They never liked him in the first place but recognized that he could be useful to them and their agenda. Once they use him, he will be left swinging in the breeze while they impeach his ass. He is as good as gone but it is just a matter of how long it takes to go through their bucket list. Then they usher Pence into the Oval Office to carry on. If I was writing a spy novel I might have come up with this plot, but the Repubs ....given the hand dealt to them, just made pragmatic decisions about how to proceed. You don't think they suddenly fell in love with that Wind Bag, tRump, do ya?

The cult of secrecy at the FBI has been going on far too long. While I can see not jeopardizing ongoing investigations, there are times they need to tell what they've got to prevent Nixons and Trumps from getting into office.

We're still facing the horrors of Nixon's drug war. Who knows what we'll face from this orange screaming asshole?

25. Comey was probably pressured by Giuliani and his friends.
Sun Jan 22, 2017, 04:50 PM
Jan 2017

Hours after Comey’s letter about the renewed probe was leaked on Friday, Giuliani went on a radio show and attributed the director’s surprise action to “the pressure of a group of FBI agents who don’t look at it politically.”

“The other rumor that I get is that there’s a kind of revolution going on inside the FBI about the original conclusion [not to charge Clinton] being completely unjustified and almost a slap in the face to the FBI’s integrity,” said Giuliani. “I know that from former agents. I know that even from a few active agents.”

Along with Giuliani’s other connections to New York FBI agents, his former law firm, then called Bracewell Giuliani, has long been general counsel to the FBI Agents Association (FBIAA), which represents 13,000 former and current agents. The group, born in the New York FBI office in the early ’80s, was headed until Monday by Rey Tariche, an agent who just retired from the New York FBI office. In Tariche’s letter to the Association stepping down as president because he's retiring from the Bureau to take a job "within the Banking Industry," he wrote that “we find our work—our integrity questioned” because of it, adding “we will not be used for political gains.”

We've seen a huge destruction in NC in the four years since Republicans seized control of the government
after gerrymandering districts. Actually, they'd done a damn good job of starting the destruction within two years.

I can only pray that Trump and Pence are both gone before the year is out and that Ryan or whoever takes over
is too frightened to do anything other than be a maintenance president until a new election is held.

This needs to be an absolutely air-tight case. It is is the biggest thing that's happened to America at least since WWII, and the bag needs to be sewed up very tight. Going after a President is hunting very big game indeed. Leaks could jeopardize that and even allow guilty parties to wriggle free. If that recognition is why possible leakers have gone to radio silence, then I'm all for it. This is a case with serious global repercussions - the future of the world is obviously hanging in the balance.

Let's hope we're seeing a duck here: above the water nothing appears to be happening, while under the surface they're paddling like hell. I frankly can't imagine them doing anything else. I'd bet that out of public view Washington is boiling like a wasp nest that's been poked with a big stick.

I had breakfast recently with a friend who's a former Republican member of Congress. Here's what he said:

Him: Trump is no Republican. He’s just a big fat ego.

Me: Then why didn’t you speak out against him during the campaign?

Him: You kidding? I was surrounded by Trump voters. I’d have been shot.

Me: So what now? What are your former Republican colleagues going to do?

Him (smirking): They’ll play along for a while.

Me: A while?

Him: They’ll get as much as they want – tax cuts galore, deregulation, military buildup, slash all those poverty programs, and then get to work on Social Security and Medicare – and blame him. And he’s such a fool he’ll want to take credit for everything.

Me: And then what?

Him (laughing): They like Pence.

Me: What do you mean?

Him: Pence is their guy. They all think Trump is out of his mind.

Me: So what?

Him: So the moment Trump does something really dumb – steps over the line – violates the law in a big stupid clumsy way … and you know he will ...

Me: They impeach him?

Him: You bet. They pull the trigger.

Mon Jan 23, 2017, 04:35 AM

...was that both houses of Congress were controlled by Democrats. Meaning that both the House and Senate were able to set up investigations with subpoena power.

If Nixon had had the Congress Trump has, Watergate would still be little more than a footnote in history books. Once the initial news came out, Nixon would have (as he did initially) "regretfully accepted" the resignations of a few key White House officials while denying all knowledge of the break-in and that would have been the end of it.

When he tried to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox in an attempt to control the watergate investigation?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Massacre

When Cox issued a subpoena to President Nixon, asking for copies of taped conversations recorded in the Oval Office and authorized by Nixon, the President initially refused to comply. On Friday, October 19, 1973, Nixon offered what was later known as the Stennis Compromise—asking the infamously hard-of-hearing Senator John C. Stennis of Mississippi to review and summarize the tapes for the special prosecutor's office. Cox refused the compromise that same evening and it was believed that there would be a short rest in the legal maneuvering while government offices were closed for the weekend.

However, on the following day (a Saturday) Nixon ordered Attorney General Richardson to fire Cox. Richardson refused, and resigned in protest. Nixon then ordered Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus to fire Cox. He also refused and resigned.[4][5]

Even if your friend's story is correct, and enough comes out that even a Republican-dominated House and Senate decide that it is in their political interest to cut bait and go with Pence...

...remember that one of the key moments during the last stages of the Watergate drama, as the House committee voted for impeachment and the release of the White House tapes made it certain that the Senate would convict, was that Chief of Staff Alexander Haig went secretly to the Joint Chiefs of the armed forces, and got their agreement that they would not follow any orders from their Commander-in-Chief to impose martial law, because Haig was convinced there was a real possibility Nixon would do so to keep himself in power.

Who would be Haig this time around? I doubt you'd find any in this administration.

Things happen faster nowadays, but perhaps your friend at the FBI and his colleagues will need plenty of time to work under Comey's radar, crafting an unignorable body of evidence.

Remember that Deep Throat turned out to be a top FBI guy...

Of course, with the NSA and the rest of the surveillance state able to keep tabs on the press, congress and the FBI, and threaten/blackmail them into silence, all bets are off. It may take a hero/heroes willing to risk their careers, freedom or even lives for impeachment to have a chance.

This was posted as an OP by a DUer - but I've misplaced that post. Plus I will quote difference parts than the other post did:

Dear Mr. Putin, Let’s Play Chess
January 17, 2017 ~ patribotics
PART ONE: PAWN TAKES QUEEN

I have an overarching theory of Russia’s attack on America and the West. Here it is.

There have not been a series of attacks on America and Europe by Vladimir Putin. There has been one single operation; it is the same operation.

By 2008, possibly even earlier, according to John Schindler, a National Security expert formerly at the NSA, Russia had placed moles in the highest levels of US counter-intelligence. I take this as my starting-point, because all the subsequent facts bear it out.

<SNIP>

Russian moles placed inside the NSA recruited Edward Snowden. A letter between the FSB in Cuba and SENAIN in Quito held in a file marked ‘Assange’ in London, dated 4th April 2013, the day before Snowden sent his only email on legalities, April 5th 2013, and before Snowden took his uppermost level documents during the rest of the month of April, proves conclusively that Mr. Snowden is a Russian agent who acted on instructions from Moscow. After Snowden fled to Hong Kong, he escaped from there by an Ecuadorean travel document arranged by Julian Assange, and tried to get to Cuba.

https://patribotics.wordpress.com/2017/01/17/dear-mr-putin-lets-play-chess-louise-mensch-trump-russia/

All three parts of her theory are there - and it is chilling.

that what he said is true - it is a truly wonderful thing to be able to believe that justice will actually prevail. I know that sounds strange, or maybe not. I suspect some of you know what I'm saying.

But...this new Trump presidency is so God-awful that it just seems so WRONG.

Even if Trump does manage to stop investigations by domestic agencies, foreign agencies like MI5 and others will continue working on it. No doubt there has been some sharing of information with other countries. Hopefully some person or persons in the US saw the writing on the wall and shared everything with at least the British before Trump took office.

Foreign agencies would have no legal power here but they may be able to create a shit storm of publicity with their findings and put the Republicans in a very awkward position.

Watch for attempts to discredit foreign intelligence agencies with false leaks which will then be "disproved" by "clever" bloggers like was done to Dan Rather.

but McCain is now voting for Tillerson and Rubio.

I know the House and Senate GOP don't believe the same things we do, but they are career politicians who would know the implications of aligning themselves with Trump and some of these horrible decisions and cabinet picks and suck, that I couldn't imagine them going along with all of this.

I want to believe as much as the next person but we've been hearing these theories for months and still nothing that's truly going to bring down Trump/Pence.

They are going after everything they can get. None are afraid of being tainted by this guy. And if the FBI and CIA had anything on him . . . why did they stand by and let him take office, gain access to the secrets of this country and the nuclear codes? Here we go again, we liberals constantly fall for this type of "HOPE" . . . It's coming . . . He'll get his . . . They will be exposed and thrown out of office. Nothing is going to happen. The press is afraid to call a lie a lie. Congress is going to undo 50 years of progress, the Supreme Court will at the very best be divided for the next 20 years, and his voters are going to grow bolder and more brazen. He doesn't care, his family doesn't care, and businesses don't care. Every day, every hour of his presidency sees more and more progress rolled back and nothing is being done to stop it. He brazenly kissed his enable Commie Comey in front of the media and nothing happened. There is not even a hint of "maybe we shouldn't be so public with our collusion". They are laughing at the liberals and their leaders. They are daring them to try and stop them. And what are we doing? What if the CIA and the FBI don't go public with what they know? What if they don't prosecute him? When the likes of McCain vote in favor of his appointments knowing full well this orange ass has colluded with a foreign government to gain the Whitehouse and still support his picks!!!??!!??!! What makes you think anything will stop him? At best this will be a protracted 4 year battle to remove him and how are we going to call for impeachment hearings when we don't control Congress? And because of gerrymandering we have no hope of gaining in midterms? Yeah I am completely without HOPE and want to know why President Obama didn't do something to keep this menace from taking over. Much of this was known by the DNC before the election. George Will surmised in a published article that he was indebt to the Russian Oligarchs! Why didn't the party demand his tax returns? Why didn't they make hay out his ties to Putin? Why did the GOP candidates not press this issue with him during the primaries? What is making people stand down from confronting him? Someone knows something . . . But there is no guarantee that we the American People will ever get to know the truth. In the meantime this Grabber-in-Chief is taking a sledge hammer to what accomplishments the left has made not just during Obama's presidency but all things liberal since the 1950s!

That may have pressured Comey? They aren't going away. There is a very partisan force within the FBI that is in cahoots with the new Fuhrer, and I'm sure would do their best to scuttle any investigation, both this one and any future crimes he will no doubt commit against America.
