Some reporter or Paper is gonna break this story because...
The Watergate scandal was pursued by only two mainstream papers at the time: The Post and the Times. Of course the Post was the Vanguard with Woodward (became rich, famous, and prolific as an author and TV guest) and Bernstein (became rich, famous, influential, AND is involved in this story about the guy who wast "inaugurated", as well as having married and divorced Nora Ephron(!))..
The story MADE these men and their careers. By all accounts this is a BIGGER story and will allow whoever breaks and follows it to become the most famous journalist(s) possibly ever. I can't wait...
(The Times' Sy Hersh (among others) investigated and published many remarkable Watergate articles)
Oh yes and one more thing: Mr and Mrs Carl Bernstein:

until it got so big the networks started carrying it live. Sen. Sam "I'm just a country lawyer" Ervin's hearings were spell binding tv to say the least.

(34,317 posts)The break-in happened in the summer of 1972, but it didn't gain traction until 1973.
There were also the Pentagon Papers which were released in 1971, which didn't make a dent in Nixon, until the whole thing collided with the Watergate investigation in 1973. The Watergate investigation showed that Nixon ordered a break-in into Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office. Events kept snowballing from there.

http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-endorsements-newspaper-editorial-board-president-2016-10
At this point, we all know 2016 is no typical election cycle. This fact is further evidenced by the lopsided endorsements of newspaper editorial boards across the country.
While Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has garnered the support of more than 240 editorial boards, her Republican rival Donald Trump has only received 19.
The Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson has received nine endorsements, and independent conservative candidate Evan McMullin has one.
In 2012, by contrast, President Barack Obama received 99 endorsements from daily newspapers, and Republican Mitt Romney received 105. Editorial boards have historically favored Republicans.
I suspect it will be newspaper reporters who blow it wide open. They still have journalists doing actual investigative work!

(15,526 posts)The Cincinnati Enquirer also endorsed Clinton, the first time they had endorsed a Democrat in about a century.
It was mostly a repudiation of Trump, though. They called him dangerous.

Is the public on the same page today?
Obstruction of justice toppled Nixon, when about half of the GOP in Congress
went against him
Could that happen today?
Call me skeptical.

(73,732 posts)they are gonna take as much as they can take, because taking is what they are after. taking our government and lining their pockets.
but there are plenty of cheeto haters on that side of the aisle. more than enough to get it done.
when they feel like they have gotten what they can get, it will be over in the blink of an eye. their knives are sharpened, and waiting in the drawer.
one thing you can count on w authoritarian followers- when the power starts to seep away, someone will be ready to step up.

(2,037 posts)Today's corporate media is not the investigative, truth-seeking institution it was in the early '70s though.
One phone call from one of the owners (typically boardroom jet-setters with deep ties to defense outfits) or a top ad buyer is usually enough to derail such things nowadays.

(2,037 posts)we would probably not have learned of it from mainstream media mostly because it's very difficult for investigative reporters to get support from media executives for anything that implies going out on a limb.
No Ben Bradlees or Katherine Grahams anymore.

(5,268 posts)Within YouTube there are a couple of great documentaries on Watergate. My favorite is one produced by the BBC (link below), which includes interviews and excerpts from many of the key moments and players in Watergate. The documentary is about 2-3 hrs in length and is definitely not recommended for slow data connections or anyone on data capped internet.
You can also view the following:
Excerpts from Sen Sam Ervin's (Watergate Committee Chairman) opening remarks to the Watergate committee
Excerpts from John Dean's testimony
Testimony to the committee by John Ehrlichman
Archibald Cox news conference that prompted the Saturday Night Massacre
Excerpts from Barbara Jordan and others
Closing statements prior to the vote to forward Articles of Impeachment to the House floor
