http://www.military.com/daily-news/2017/01/22/silencer-business-booms-as-deregulation-bill-heads-for-debate.html"The bill, the Hearing Protection Act of 2017, was introduced Jan. 9 by Reps. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina and John Carter of Texas, both Republicans, and has 68 sponsors in all. It would retroactively remove the $200 tax on suppressors, and remove them from regulation under the National Firearms Act, in the name of reducing shooters' hearing loss.
While a similar piece of legislation introduced in 2015 never made it out of committee, advocates say they're cautiously optimistic that the bill will pass this year"
This is beyond belief to me. These are the things assassins use .

(41 posts)" and remove them from regulation under the National Firearms Act"
So anyone will be able to walk in their local Walmart and buy one.
This is not a suppressor as you call it these are actual silencers they are talking about.

(2,297 posts)And the National Firearms Act was poorly named. Probably should have been called the Machine Gun Federal Tax Act.

(41 posts)The article was a bit confusing because it did write something about the suppressor industry but then
it begins to talk about silencers .

(19 posts)....that is the $200 tax part. You can buy pre-1986 machine guns, short barreled rifles/shotguns, or even build your own suppressor, if you fill out the correct forms and pay a $200 tax to the US Treasury Department. It's been that way since the law was enacted in 1934. Even in European countries that have tough gun laws, silencers are sold over-the-counter without any regulations. In some countries, they are mandatory to use if you wish to fire a gun. All that bill does is remove that tax and shorten the wait time.

(20,281 posts)Suppressors are very loosely regulated (and in some instances required) in many countries with otherwise tight gun laws.
If you're afraid they'll make guns Hollywood-style quiet, you have little to fear; in real life they only remove a small amount of noise from the shot. More of a boom than a crack, but still very noticeable.

(15,396 posts)but I'm not holding my breath.
Actually come to think about it a bit, I'd leave the 09 alone since it's my HD pistol and has night sights, and instead buy a threaded barrel for my 75 and install suppressor sights.

(117 posts)i live in CA. and if i'm not mistaken threaded barrels are illegal. can someone from Ca clarify this for me?

(6,324 posts)On most handguns you can't aim with a suppressor mounted without modified sights because it obstructs the view.

(6,324 posts)They will still require the same level of background check as always, only it will be done with the FBI instant system instead of the old manual system that was established in 1934 and takes months to complete because the staff is so backed up. And it removes the $200 tax, but when you look at the amount of labor and resources used to run the checks via the old 1934 system the government spends more than $200 to process that anyway, so no real loss of revenue.
Suppressors are actually good for shooters and non-shooters because of the reduced noise levels, and make a huge difference in how much damage is done to the ears. Most reduce the gunshot down to a few DB quieter than a car backfire, they are not like the movies.
Even the CDC and NIOSH say that suppressors are a good safety measure, and anyone who works in industrial hygiene or occupational safety will tell you the best way to deal with noise levels that are damaging to hearing is reduce them at the source, with ear plus and muff a distant second.
As for criminal use- if a criminal wanted a homemade suppressor today they just need to go to Home Depot for some pipe fittings and adapters and make a mount to thread an oil filter onto the gun. After the first shot punches the hole in the end it makes a suppressor that reduces sound levels about 25-30 db and will last about 100 rounds until you need a new filter. So if they wanted one now nothing stops them, and it doesn't seem to be an issue.

(8,541 posts)Besides calling it a silencer is a bit misleading as it doesn't silence anything.
Subsonic .22 rounds are quieter than most anything out there.
