32 gay men were murdered with impunity in 1973 and you know nothing about it (Warning - graphic pic)

I was so shocked by Rowdyboy's thread in the LGBT Group that I asked him if I could post a link to it here. Please read his post and pass it on. These men should not be forgotten.

...it may be considerate of DUers with PTSD or other sensitivities to put a graphic warning in your subject line.

Should I delete the picture or just put a warning in the OP title. Either one works for me.

I believe that images like that need to be shown. Human suffering should not be swept under the rug, and these kinds of horrors need to be made real. So that would argue for leaving the image in with a graphic warning. But at the same time, if you put up a graphic warning, DUers who for whatever reason don't feel comfortable looking at those images will miss the chance to learn about this story...which would argue for taking the image out.

I could respect either decision on your part.

And thank you for bringing this to broader attention, by the way. I did not know about it until your post.

I could find no marker anywhere on the building that said anything about it. If you look closely, someone stuck a flower in the bars in the lower right hand corner of the picture.

The complete list of the 32 people killed in the fire can be found at The UpStairs Fire: 25th Memorial Service website.

A sidewalk memorial plaque rests outside the building, dedicated on the fire's 30th anniversary in 2003.
