Its important to remember just how radical and, yes, unprecedented the Senates approach to the previous Supreme Court nominee was.
Republican leaders announced last March that they would not consider any nominee. They did so even though Barack Obama still had 10 months left in his term and even though other justices (including Anthony Kennedy) had been confirmed in a presidents final year.
The refusal was a raw power grab. Coupled with Republican hints that no Hillary Clinton nominee would be confirmed either, it was a fundamental changing of the rules: Only a party that controlled both the White House and the Senate would now be able to assume it could fill a Supreme Court vacancy.
The change is terribly damaging for the countrys political system. It impedes the smooth functioning of the court and makes it a much more partisan institution.

(10,725 posts)and has no business in a government based on freedom and equality. I think its important to realize the ideology of what we are up against, and to move beyond historical resemblances with past discredited regimes. What they are is radical christian nationalists, and they are far more of a threat to the US and our future than anyone outside the country.

(195 posts)"Elections have consequences."
The plain fact is that the Democrats failed in getting out the vote. Period.
The silver lining though is "redemption". The fact that so many of us are now expressing our displeasure with the result and demonstrating in many different forms, forums and mediums, will likely send a message to current representatives.
Both Republican and, especially Democrats, should be made aware that it is no longer "business as usual". Democratic reps need to understand that their strategies of appeasement will not work anymore.
If you want to follow the appeasement route (Heidi Heitkamp) in order to protect your seat, then you'll have two elections (hopefully) to participate in. And it's likely, that the primary may be the harder of the two.
The other side has made it clear that they WILL NOT COMPROMISE. So, if we give in, that's not a compromise, that's appeasement. The term "appeasement" means to yield or concede to belligerent demands in a conciliatory effort, sometimes at the expense of justice or other principles.
Now is the time to draw the line in the sand and not cross it. Yes. There will be short term pain and discomfort. But the reward at the end of the struggle is worth it!
