This is from a post by Josh Marshall yesterday.
"We hear people constantly saying 'Nothing will change his supporters' minds. They're with him no matter what.' First of all this is enervating defeatism which is demoralizing and loserish. But it also misses the point. It is factually wrong. For the supporters those people have in mind, they're right. They're true believers, authoritarians who are energized by Trump's destructive behavior. But there are not that many of those people. A big chunk of Trump's voters voted for him in spite of their dislike. Those people can be carved away."
I'm curious about reactions to that part of the quote, but I will note he goes on to say something I find much more controversial.
But Democrats will regain power by winning it in what amount to our 21st century internal American borderlands, not in the big cities or rural areas mainly but in between. So what's happening now to lay that groundwork for 2018?
So there's that. But on the initial idea; that a significant portion of Trumps voters in 2016 could be moved away from him, does that ring true?

(7,299 posts)anyone would suggest that we waste our time on those losers instead of investing our time and energy reaching out to the 46% of eligible voters that didn't vote. #Math matters.

(11,804 posts)You have to determine what is more likely - you can persuade a significant number of people who voted for Trump that they were wrong and should vote against him next time around or you can persuade a significant number people who didn't bother to vote in the face of Trump that they should vote the next time around. I don't know which would be harder for sure, but it seems like convincing people who already take the time to vote to change their vote is more possible than convincing people who couldn't be bothered to vote to suddenly start caring.

(7,299 posts)portion of the 46% who didn't vote are about to get an eye opener. Trump voters will never admit that they were wrong and placed this country in danger.

(24,774 posts)We'll never win the hearts and minds of hardcore Trumpanzees because they're diehards. Some Trump voters, however, were taken in by his hustle of bringing jobs back to their locales that he knew would never return in the same way and with the same pay they left. tRump played on their desperation for work and lied like a tattered rug to them in such a convincing way (to them) that even some Democrats and union folks in the Rust Belt fell for his hustle.
Most rural people I know are not very streetwise because they were never taught the street smarts enough to resist a con because they rarely had to deal with a slick-talking scam artist like DT. It's upon us to teach them the telltale signs of a swindler so they can see through their ruses before it's too late.

(7,299 posts)trail for 18 months. They have no excuse. They are a waste of time. Our future depends on motivating the 46% who didn't vote. Ignorance is an incurable disease.

(31,261 posts)Democrats to take back the House. Many people that voted for Trump did so for economic reasons, he conned them into believing that he had "solutions". As it becomes more clear that Trump is an economic disaster, the people that voted jobs will abandon him. I am more concerned about the "no difference" people that are nominally on our side, those people are complete idiots when it come to seeing clear and present danger embodied by republican candidates. None of the "no difference" idiots can convince me that we would not be far better off today had we had Clinton-Gore-Obama-Clinton Presidencies rather than what we had. Our problem are the so called progressives that are such purist that they lose any sense of what happens in a society.

(6,496 posts)Seriously if Hillary Clinton was anti abortion they may have voted for her instead. What can be done about the abortion issue? People will vote to live in a hell whole if it means saving babies. They are nuts.

(31,261 posts)Control after the 2004 election and went nuts with the prolife stuff (remember the attempts to change laws, the first attacks on PP, Terry Schiavo in Florida, attempts to change SS and Medicare?), Democrates took control of the House and Senate two years later and had a near super majority within four years. If Trump and republicans overreach, Democrats can have a big 2018 if the party choses a solid DNC Leader and gets it's messaging right.

(24,774 posts)Their churches not only tell them that, but also spiritually abuse them by threatening them with hellfire and damnation if they vote Democratic--even if the Democrat opposes abortion, but favors measures that protect life after the baby is born instead of throwing the women to the wolves and controlling them.

(99,716 posts)I will rephrase the question.
What percentage of those 46% are irredeemable Deplorables? I would say 90%. But if we can peal away 10% that is significant.

You are aware that you can't do a survey and directly ask folks if they are homophobes, racists, xenophobes, sexists, nativists, et cetera and get meaningful results. Most folks don't want to believe they are homophobes, racists, xenophobes, et cetera. However you can do surveys where you can indirectly ask such questions to suss these characteristics out. I bet you get to 90%. BTW, I am sure the number is significantly higer than 0% on our side. However it nowhere near as high.

(31,261 posts)Voted for Trump because he claimed that he could bring back jobs. Once those voters see that Trump is a disaster in the jobs area, they will be open to vote for Democrats. Other nations like China, Mexico, Canada, the European Union at large, won't just stay flat footed and let Trump do things that weaken their economies - they will organize and fight back. My biggest fear is that by the time a Democrat takes over the Presidency in 2021, the world will have largely bypassed the USA, we will be feared for only our military muscle, but not respected or even taken seriously for anything else - we will lose influence over the next four years that we will never get back.

(99,716 posts)Theoretically if we can pick up 10% of the Trump voters we win back the Senate, the House, and the presidency. We also win back a majority of governors and state legislatures.

(1,803 posts)who made up a portion of those who voted for him. And there were many just who had a visceral and irrational hate of Hillary Clinton, in large part fostered by the right, beginning when she took on healthcare as First Lady during the Bill Clinton Presidency and egged on by Right-wing propaganda over the years. There is significant buyers' remorse among both factions, more so among the Hillary haters who held their noses when voting against her.

(13,431 posts)The true believers including the evangelicals and deplorables (certainly lots of overlap in those last two groups) are a complete waste of time.
Then again, the white voter turnout will never be as high as it was in 2016. It peaked due to the craziest confluence of events that Republicans will never be able to repeat. It will drop noticeably in 2020 whereas Dem turnout in cities and suburbs will continue to increase - just as it increased in 2016. IA and OH may remain out of reach; but AZ, FL, GA, MI, NC, PA and WI can be won in 2020. TX may should also be a race separated by just a small handful of points. And once TX moves into play, brighter days for our country will finally arrive.
