One cable news channel keeps showing a clip of Trump saying:
"What's going on in Shee-cago?"
My brother lived there for decades and pronounced it Shaw-cago.
Which is it?

(109,001 posts)I know there are people there who call it Shi-CAH-guh, but that pronunciation really grated on my parents.
How does Obama pronounce it? We should let him be the tie-breaker.

(24,065 posts)Shuh-CAW-go was his pronunciation, my mother's after they married, and therefore mine, as well. I was born in the city, but grew up in western upstate NY first Buffali, then Rochester). Now live the the far northwest suburbs of Chicago.
I will have to listen more closely to how others around here pronounce it.

(2,197 posts)After all, it does depend, in part, on where you are from (if you came to Chicago from elsewhere) and it depends on where you live in Chicago.
The real test here to see who is and who is not a true Chicagoian would be this: How do you pronounce "Loyola?"
pnwmom
(109,001 posts)Loy--OH--lah ???
There are other Loyolas (Loyola Marymount, Loyola New Orleans), by the way, and they pronounce it the same.
Chitown Kev
(2,197 posts)and the way that I usually pronounce Loyola...but many (if not most Chicagoians) pronunce it another way...and I've even heard train conductors pronounce "Loyola" this other way for over 20 years.

We would more likely be referring to Loyola Hospital in Maywood than the school. Even though that is the School's hospital. I'm sure of it.

(2,197 posts)It's simply the way that many people in Chicago pronounce it...I think that it's an education thing since I've heard black, white, and Latino pronounce it that way.
