One of my face-book friends wrote this recently. Too good not to share:
To Muslim Shop-Keepers: I'm glad you are in my neighborhood.
That's what I told them. I walked to nearby shops and eateries and said:
I wish you peace, health, and prosperity. I wish an end to this hate. Welcome.
I'm glad you're in the neighborood.
I could do this: It was personal and direct. It depended on me alone, not a vote in Congress.
I could do it, and so I did.
A middle-aged woman in a head-scarf came from behind the counter and hugged me.
An old man smiled, his hands never stopping the work of making sandwiches.
A man peered from behind a display of dried fruit, listening.
Young men, dark-haired heads bent over lunch plates at four tiny tables, looked up.
The waitress, her long dark hair in a ponytail, began to cry. She reached out and squeezed my hand.
A man, one hand on the door-knob, the other holding a heavy grocery bag, turned to me," You give us hope."
