Not only the handshake, I am watching the kickoff to the meeting with women executives. One thing about tRump is he ALWAYS tries to use the person's first name, while having them use MR TRUMP or PRESIDENT TRUMP. This goes all the way back to his stupid tv show.
This morning he introduced Prime Minister Trudeau, then when Trudeau starts the thanks "Donald."
Seems small, but it was an intentional fuck you to the Donald.

(15,543 posts)It is so low. Pathetic cheating republican gamesmanship. I'd imagine Trudeau - and the rest of the world - have caught on to the republican grifter-in-chief's sleazy Casino Jerk Handshake by now.

(14,153 posts)Trudeau is going to be trying his best not to get on his bad side right away. Its like tiptoeing around a defensive paranoid meth addicted bully. As a Canadian I don't want to antagonize this big orange bully because of the repercussions he could inflict. I wish it weren't so. I was anticipating we would finally have a nice stretch of Canada and the USA both with more liberal governments and what we could accomplish together for climate change etc... sigh.

(21,088 posts)He will need them to deal with Trump effectively, while letting him know that he's talking to an equal who won't back down. He started off well with the handshake defense and addressing him as "Donald". The bilateral trade volume is a major mitigating factor, but a couple of missteps on Justin's part could bring the shitgibbon's resentment to the boil. We'll see where it goes.
I'm so relieved it's not "Little Stevie" Harper down there...

(33,643 posts)And yeah, that shit was AWESOME. That alone made the whole show.
Well, that, and ... as much as I hate to admit it ... Bruno nailed the Prince tribute ... He's nowhere near the guitarist Prince was (RIP Purple One) but he did the man justice, and not many others could. I wish he'd played like 10 more songs tbh ... because a little 'The Time' medley and 'Lets Go Crazy' was just ... not enough.

(67,782 posts)I had a boss for years who never bothered to learn my name - "Alan", he kept spelling it "Allen". Finally I got pissed and started misspelling his last name. After a few weeks he asked me about it, and I told him. He never spelled my name wrong again.
I love Prime Minister Trudeau - it's too bad he and Barack Obama couldn't have served together longer. I suspect they have the same personalities and senses of humor.

(2,142 posts)She called me Deanne, rather than Deanna. At first, it was no big deal since it has happened a lot in my life and I'm fairly used to it. But it continued, even after she heard others call me by my proper name right in front of her - AND a couple of times someone even strongly emphasized the "a" at the end. Plus, it wasn't like she never saw my name written either. I don't know what her deal was, but I never bothered to correct her. It did irk me though.

(80,693 posts)It's an "I'M the adult and YOU'RE the child and YOU will address ME with a term of respect" thing.
It's reinforced with school children. You are not on first-name basis with your teacher. It's ALWAYS "Mrs. So-&-So," "Mr. So-&-So," "Ms. So-&-So" (or in my case, "Sister So-&-So" for the kids to address their teachers. The teachers address their students on a first-name basis. It's about rank. Who's superior and who's inferior. Who's on top and who's underneath. Knowing your place in that structure. When you go to the doctor you usually address him or her as "Dr. So-&-So", not by his or her first name (unless, of course, you happen to have been friends for a long time).
It's a construct that shows you which direction the respect is to be given. Upward from little you to the ranking person who has a title (the Mr./Mrs./Ms./Dr.) to prove it.
Being on first-name basis denotes a peer level thing. Parity. Equal ranking. Both at the same level.

(23,812 posts)...and introduce myself as "Mrs." at the pediatric office where I work. Our office has 9 doctors. I am the only nurse practitioner. No one calls my physician colleagues by their first names, even if the doc walks in to an exam room and says , "Hi, I'm Susan Jones." The parent never responds with "Hi, Susan." Never.
For some reason, if I, as the nurse practitioner, introduce myself as 'Cat Woman,' people thinks it is OK to call me by my first name. I think that going by a formal title serves to affirm that the patient is getting the same level of professionalism as they get from the physicians.
I address the parents as Mr. or Mrs. to be respectful to them. There are a few moms I have known long enough that we use first names if on the phone, but not in front of the kids.
My early career was spent in the AIr Force nurse corps, where, of course, everyone was addressed by rank. I my first civilian job after that, it just felt like to much of a switch to go from "Captain" (and eventually Major) to my first name.
Most NPs I know do go by their first names. I guess I am an outlier.

The name thing IS important. Don't know if Trudeau intentionally used the first name to make him on an equal level. But I'm certain the Donald noticed. He's into that sort of thing.

(115,267 posts)extend your hand only a short distance with your hand slightly lower than normal, and tense up your bicep as SCROTUS takes your hand. When he does the pull you resist instead of letting him draw your hand toward him. He'd be pretty flummoxed, I think; and wouldn't dare yank hard because then it would be too obvious what he was trying to do. If you were a big strong guy with big hands you might want to grasp his hand very firmly, until the bones grind just a bit.
Dustlawyer
(10,493 posts)Grinding the bones in his hand with a handshake would be good too, small hands just invite that!
