Victorian Era Thinking

I was once told in a college English class that in the past (I think the Victorian Era) women were not considered real people. It was believed that women did not have souls. I/the class was told that during that time period it was believed that women only had souls when they were pregnant. After the baby was born the woman no longer had a soul.
