I agree. Glad some Republicans are coming to their senses!
A president of the United States, on the official POTUS Twitter feed, assails a department store for dropping his daughters merchandise. On the same day, the Pentagon is looking to rent space in the Trump Tower. Trumps son travels to Uganda to make a Trump business deal. And, of course, foreign diplomats will stay at the Trump Hotel. The cash comes marching in.
The phony legalisms Trump has said he used to separate himself from his businesses though he still owns them and his sons are running them will be cited to make this all acceptable. Horsefeathers. No ethical expert could say with a straight face that this is not a classic conflict of interest.
In any time except our post-factual era, no office holder, much less the president, could get away with any one of the dozens of dazzlingly illegal things Trump has already done. They would forfeit office immediately.
The leader of the band of Mad Hatters occupying the White House has already insulted allied world leaders, issued illegal and badly written orders, impugned a so-called judge appointed by his own party, and appointed the least-qualified cabinet ever. The first secretary of state was Thomas Jefferson. Trump appointed a big-oil executive with close ties to Russia. The first treasury secretary was Alexander Hamilton. Trump appointed a former Goldman Sachs exec who got rich foreclosing on homeowners. The national security advisor lasted 24 days.
And all thats just at the time I write this. Who knows what happens next. Each new day is a new nightmare. We are still trying to digest one breathtaking assault on America when another is signed, issued, or Tweeted. All this amid constant lies. Constant. Lies.
I am a lifelong Republican. I voted for every Republican presidential candidate from 1968 to 2004. But I have watched what once was a sane, center-right party go off the rails, first to the extreme right, then to wherever Trump is, which is in another universe.
Its tough, but we must end this dangerous presidency. Trump must be impeached and removed with all haste. But only Congress can initiate the process.
Our congressman, Steve Chabot, has been busy defending Trump from the media, which is simply reporting Trumps machinations. Its time for him to man-up and start drafting the articles of impeachment. As I remember, he did it for Clinton for far less than Trump has already done.
After the election, many hoped that Trump would grow up into the job that he couldnt possibly be as bad as some thought. Well, its gone the other way. The bully has become a more entitled bully. Anyone disagreeing is attacked. Policy is announced in illiterate tweets.
Basic American values free speech, the rule of law, separation of powers, even common decency are unknown in this White House. We now have a president who has no concept of separation of powers, or why we have three branches of government. If he knew anything about the Constitution, he would know the framers envisioned just the situation we have now a would-be dictator. They provided checks and balances such as an independent judiciary to protect us from presidential tyranny.
Enabling a bully is always a mistake. As soon as the Tweet on Nordstroms came out, I said that the Republicans would defend the indefensible, and their talking point would be a father supporting his daughter. It wasnt an hour later that Rep Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told CNN it didnt bother him. But even Chaffetz had to choke when Kellyanne Conway urged people to buy Ivanka Trumps shoes.
All the above bothers me and should appall all Americans. We must admit we have elected a president who has immediately proved himself to be a grifter, a pathological liar, a mean-spirited bully and dangerous to American values. This not-ready-for-prime-time show is too dangerous to continue. America is at stake.
If you need help drafting those articles of impeachment, Steve, I am available.

(4,835 posts)When it is established that the Trump campaign was coordinating with the Russians, members of the Trump campaign are under scrutiny too.
The senate will investigate Pence. Whatever republican senator distinguishes themselves by standing up to the administration will be the next president. We are starting to see the republican senators line up to investigate the Russian connection.
I think even Ryan is gonna be tainted since he seems to have backed off his opposition to Trump around the time Trump was asking the Russian's to help find Hillary's lost emails.
We need Pence to step in to keep things from spiraling out of control, but he isn't going to make it til the end of this term. Just like in Nixon's second term, I think both Trump and Pence will resign before this is over, but it will all transpire in an organized fashion.
The next president will be required to enact some serious election reform. Hopefully, that will also target foreign owned fake news companies such as Fox News.

(5,626 posts)and his incredible concern for 'Murica, he's been throwing up as many obstacles and delays to an investigation of the Russian allegations. Fuck him -- he is despicable.

(18,470 posts)If I had my way there would be a new Amendment XXVIII that says that absolutely every American citizen who has reached the age of 16 is eligible to vote and that vote cannot be abridged or denied for any reason what so ever. And that voter suppression and electoral fraud is punishable by life imprisonment without parole. And that it is the affirmative duty of every elected official to promote and encourage all citizens to vote. And that foreign interference in our elections shall be considered an act of war.

(5,730 posts)We need him out b4 he blows up the world . Im not sure we can get him out fast enough and his puppeteer, Bannon, especially with Putin down, wants war. He is a man on a mission. Look at his past writings . Putin didnt really want war, just power and territory. He has No problem bombing kids in syria or anywhere else to get it though.
I think Sessions is the most despicable of all, and he will be in charge of investigating the camp he worked in and the administration, even Comey. Everything about him, his past, his decisions, his lies about his resume, his continued bigotry is repugnant. We can only rely on him to obstruct justice in this situation.
We would have to impeach so far up the chain of command to get to a decent human being, it would take a century, plus not in real universe. Besides Ryan and Turtleman would be more lethal, smarter, and more likely to be elected.
I think get DT out asap, Sickening Pence in, and then obstruct until election. Dem Party needs to wake up and get to places like Georgia, when people are down on DT, and chip at some seats. Another Wisconsin, not thinking worth it to spend $ there.
TG for our press. Its all we have now, plus, the resistance of the masses.

(37,748 posts)I don't think removal of a sitting President would, or could be ignored as you state.
It would be the center-piece of the evening news for the next eighteen months.
It's red-meat for all news organizations, and would come to define the Pence administration should it get that far.

I'm not optimistic that any of them will emerge as actual human beings.

It has to start somewhere. Those elected officials are sucking @ the public trough and are not about to jeopardize their easy pay check.

(11,686 posts)The president picks his vice president and they run together as a package. Well, if there is an impeachment they should go together as the same package. The ONLY reason a vice should take over is if the president become unable to function at all or dies.
