In another example of the declining fortunes of the right-wing extremism propagated by conservative media and displayed so prominently by the GOP family of clowns competing for the Republican nomination for president, Nielsen has reported that the ratings for Fox News have taken a steep dive in 2011.

Of the three main cable news networks, Fox News is the only one that went down compared to their ratings in 2010. And a double-digit decline at that. FoxPods will, as usual, point out that Fox is still the top cable news network, but that is beside the point. Its audience is peeling away at a rapid rate and over time they will be unable to sustain their leading position. It is also important to put those numbers in context. While Fox is the #1 cable news network, they lag far behind the broadcast nets. In fact, the highest rated program on Fox (O'Reilly Factor) has about half the viewers of the lowest rated broadcast news program (CBS Evening news).
All three cable networks were impacted by extraordinary events that affected their ratings performance. CNN was helped by breaking news stories like the death of Osama Bin Laden and the Japanese earthquake/tsunami/nuclear crisis. Because CNN has the best developed network of international bureaus, viewers frequently turn to CNN for major breaking news events.
MSNBC was hurt by the loss of Keith Olbermann and numerous schedule shakeups, but still managed to land in positive territory. Fox, of course, lost a notorious personality in Glenn Beck, but that likely kept Fox from declining even more than they did. Beck's ratings were in free fall and dropped 37% between January and his sign-off in June. His replacement, "The Five," has held pretty steady since its debut.
The fall of Fox News is striking evidence of the shift in the nation's attitudes toward the ultra-conservative philosophy advanced by Fox and their brazenly biased facilitators. For Fox to be alone in decline in a year that includes a Republican-only primary campaign is a devastating indictment of the network and the propaganda tactics they employ.

(22,742 posts)CNN ratings in 2011 show improvement; Fox remains the leader

For each of the three major news networks in 2011, there was good news and bad news, depending on how you spin it.
Fox News could take comfort that it remains the dominant ratings leader, drawing more viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined both during the entire day and prime time

(24,721 posts)& I wonder how much more FN's ratings would fall. I suspect that these businesses are given something by Fixed News in return for keeping their tv's tuned in to their crap. Perhaps FN pays their monthly cable bills, is my guess.
While at my husband's doctor's office a few months ago, we were the only people sitting in the waiting room. I turned the tv channel from Fixed News & the nurse who had been standing behind the glass partition came through the door in a huff, seemingly trying to control her anger by loudly straightening the magazines on each side table.
I then told my husband in front of her, "I'm not about to sit here listening to that garbage."
Why would she be bent out of shape if she wasn't able to hear the tv from behind that glass parition & my husband & I were the only people sitting in the waiting room?

Fox fan stood up, picked up his food and left the room.

(1,035 posts)Casual Fox viewers (Read: Less than hard core conservatives) may have been put off by a media company that hacked a child murder victim's phone in pursuit of a story. That one and all the other distasteful revelations about Fox's "news" gathering methods was sure to drive off a few people.

(18,967 posts)I have Conservative friends who will not watch FOX News any more, they always knew it was biased, but they no longer tolerate the blatant lying. It's one thing to have a slant on the news, it's another thing to make up facts and present them as the news. Even some Cons are questioning the legitimacy of FOX as a News organization.
I think we owe a debt of gratitude to Media Matters and other watchdogs who every day expose more FOX News lies. I consider it my duty as a citizen to let as many people know about every single FOX News lie I hear about. Eventually it gets through to some people.

(18,186 posts)Radio is seeing a decline in the popularity of hate talk as well. Americans seem to be increasingly looking for solutions rather than blame.
It probably didn't help that a recent study proved FOX watchers were more ignorant about current events than those who watch no news at all! Who wants to watch a network that MAKES you stupid?
Add to that the fact that one in every two of us lives in poverty, and that sense of being some potential rich person some day is gone. People are getting the disconnect between what the snake oil salesjerks on FOX say and what Congress is actually doing to help them.
I hope FOX loses tons of revenue. I wish the whole Rupert Murdoch Evil Propaganda Empire could just be flushed down the toilet.
And I'm glad Americans are waking up to the truth and rejecting FOX's stupidity and lies.
And BTW, F**K the FCC for letting FOX continually spew lies and propaganda on our public-owned media like radio. The FCC are tools of the 1%, not watchdogs for the American people.

That is interesting and has not been pointed out often enough when they claim they are #1.

(2,529 posts)They might be dying off. Or at least, getting tired of having FOX commentators calling their Medicare an entitlement and suggesting it should be done away with or voucherized. Not only that, but maybe it gets old after a while to listen to a constant stream of pro-wealthy rants when you're barely getting by on Social Security.
