(1,969 posts)memories of standing on the overlook of the Hudson River watching a convoy leave the river for the New York Bay, the statue of Liberty to the open Atlantic. There were hundreds of thousands watching as the convoy departed for Yalta with FDR on board. Bitter cold but no one left. I was only nine years l but I still get chills.

Founded in 2014, the Simons Society of Fellows is a community of scholars that encourages intellectual interactions across disciplines and across research centers in the New York City area.
Senior Fellows of the Simons Society of Fellows are distinguished scientists based in New York City.
Junior Fellows are outstanding young scientists who receive support from the foundation for three years to conduct independent research at an institution of higher learning in New York City, with no teaching obligations.
The Simons Foundation is pleased to announce the Junior Fellows appointed in 2016.

(11,865 posts)Renaissance is at war politically!
Hahaha!
We want Jim Simons on our side. He is smart enough to counter Cambridge Analytica! He and Mercer are the truly brilliant original data scientists - on opposing sides politically, but on the same side at Renaissance. Simons is the only guy that can fire Mercer, but Mercer is exceptionally talented and brilliant - too bad he is an asshole extraordinaire.
Just a couple days ago there was an article about another longtime Renaissance employee stirring the pot from the left against Mercer - said he hopes not to get fired, but couldn't stand what Mercer was doing to the country. Has been at Renaissance for 20 years, so he is super rich and has no need to worry, but good for him! Name was David Magerman - story on Bloomberg.

(11,677 posts)Turns out -- after I posted this, I searched a little (See my post below) that the Simons are helping to raise money for the Obama Presidential Library --

(11,677 posts)Former President Barack Obama just made a splash in New York City, drawing big crowds after apparently meeting with a foundation that has a connection to the planned Obama Presidential Library in Chicago.
Obama was at a building where the Simons Foundation is headquartered. James Simons and his wife, Marilyn, are big-time philanthropists who reportedly donated around $700,000 earmarked for the Library.

Obama Comes To NYC And Gets Greeted Like The Ex We Really, Really Want Back
Remember Obama? Seems like a thousand years ago when he was president, when basic politics and essential freedomsincluding that of the press and transgender populationswere generally respected?
Those sepia-toned memories came rushing back on Friday afternoon in New York City, when President Barack Obama made a brief appearance on Fifth Avenue while exiting an unknown office building. The hoots, hollers, and applause may indicate a sincere longing for the former leader of the free worldin Trumps hometown of course.
