Great day for Democrats! I haven't felt this good, and hopeful, since before the Disaster of November 8.

(318,184 posts)Cha, this is a "where were ya?" moment. Years from now, our children and grandchildren will ask us where we were when Trump and the GOP attacked the core values of our country and our party.
I vowed after November 8th, 2016 that I would do whatever I could to move our party forward, and I'm honored to step into this new role as Chair of the DNC today.
I want to be able to say I did everything in my power to fight back. How about you, Cha?
If we're going to organize and fight and win, it's going to take folks like you at every level. We need to strengthen our team from the grassroots up to build the party that empowers every single Democrat to fight for our progressive values and vision of opportunity and optimism.

(318,184 posts)People, including the media, who claim Tom isn't progressive (enough) are out of their fucking minds. If the Republicans hate and fear him, that's good enough for me!

(35,454 posts)When they talk about grass roots or progressives who are they talking about...the Newbies? 'Cause I certainly consider myself a progressive and have been grassroots since for decades I was one of the ones making calls and writing letters, long before Weaver and other like him got 'religion'. So I don't need to be lectured by anyone about what is needed. I saw Weaver on MSNBC the other day threatening what would or wouldn't be if Ellison wasn't elected. And frankly, I think the actions of his supporters, sending out a false message about Mayor Pete and yelling and carrying on at the back of the room, was unappreciated and was a real factor in sinking Ellison's changes Saturday.
Cha
(318,184 posts)the same observation of why Keith lost.
People like Weaver want to hi-jack everything.. they're the only ones who count. So he threatened on tv about what would happen if Ellison lost. I hope he feels foolish like he should now.
So divisive.. that's never going to be a winning strategy.

The reality is, Perez is a pathbreaker in his own right, becoming the first Latino to lead the Democratic party. And his platform was nearly indistinguishable from Ellison's during the several-months-long campaign for chairman. Both men, like the other eight candidates running, emphasized organizing and reconnecting with the party's grassroots, a glaring weakness in their 2016 defeats. Thousands of those people, however, are now turning out to protest Trump and his policies, a sign of the energy on the left that Democrats hope to capitalize on in the years ahead.
His goal as party chair, Perez said in his opening remarks, is "organize, organize, organize." Like his fellow candidates, Perez emphasized the need for Democrats to contest races up and down the ballot and all around the country, from school board to Congress. "We must redefine the role of the DNC so that were not simply electing the president," Perez said, an implicit rebuke of the party during its eight years under President Obama.
