He tore off his chef’s coat and told a black-tie crowd, ‘I am an immigrant’

Chef José Andrés speaks about being an immigrant during South Beach Wine & Food Festival's Formal Tribute Dinner at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017. The Master of Ceremonies was Anthony Bourdain and Gloria Estefan helped present the evening's tribute. Video @ link~

José Andrés tore off his white chef’s coat on stage to reveal a black T-shirt with the simple words he would go on to stress during a tribute dinner in his honor: “I am an immigrant.”

The 400 or so black-tie guests at the annual South Beach Wine & Food Festival auction dinner to raise money for Florida International’s hospitality school stood and applauded so long Andrés had to pause his speech at the end of a night of luxurious dining.

“The American dream of the 21st century is to be an America of inclusion not of exclusion,” Andrés, a Spanish immigrant who became a U.S. citizen three years ago, told the crowd as he advocated for immigrant protections. “I am an immigrant and a proud American immigrant. Together, we can keep moving this amazing country forward.”

This was a night when top chefs — Andrew Zimmern, Michael Voltaggio, assistants for Emeril Lagasse — honored one of their own by collaborating to prepare a decadent meal at $500 a ticket at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, with Emilio and Gloria Estefan in attendance. It was emceed by chef, author and “No Reservations” television host Anthony Bourdain.

Bourdain, too, has been critical of Trump’s stance on immigration, particularly since, he said, immigrants of varying legal status “do the work” in restaurant kitchens around the country. The fact Andrés backs up his words with his myriad restaurants, Bourdain said, adds another layer to the power of his voice.

“I have nothing to lose to take that stand. I don’t run a restaurant empire. The president ain’t going to sue me for $10 million,” Bourdain said. “José risked everything to take a principled stand. And I don’t think he can be admired enough for that.”

Bourdain is a non-chef, repellent and gross wanna be. His obnoxious "expose" book years ago did not make real chefs and cooks happy. Not kidding we were pissed that he pulled the curtain back from something akin to a magician telling his audience how he/she does their tricks. It is repulsive.

"Bourdain, too, has been critical of Trump’s stance on immigration, particularly since, he said, immigrants of varying legal status “do the work” in restaurant kitchens around the country. "

Bourdain once again misses the point. The point is, restaurateurs hire illegal aliens, paying them less, not funding Social Security and pushing people out of the business. I was in the business for 25 years as a cook, lead line cook, sous-chef and executive chef, hell I was even head dishwasher when needed. I hired people that were here illegally. I was ordered to, it wasn't about the restaurant losing sooooo much money by hiring someone that already knew how to do the job, rather than someone that had to be trained over months of training. (Which actually causes money to be lost.)

This is one glaring incident when no one can say they take the jobs because no one else will. I knew a lot of cooks and chefs that couldn't get work because the owners didn't understand they were actually losing money by hiring untrained workers. They also never had to worry about ICE coming down on them and arresting them or fining them for hiring undocumented workers.

Hope I don't get dinged for this, but this is something that has to be talked about honestly.

Because if he's a legal immigrant, even the Trump administration is not going against them and hasn't talked about them.

dt filed a lawsuit against him when Andres pulled out of a deal with him.

A source close to the case confirms the videotaped deposition took place at Trump Tower in New York and lasted 90 minutes. The $10 million civil lawsuit, for breach of contract, was filed by Trump's lawyers in August 2015 against celebrity chef José Andrés' restaurant group, Think Food Group. Andrés pulled out of a plan to open an upscale restaurant at the hotel after then-candidate Trump disparaged Mexican immigrants.

Except for their blocking green card holders from the 7 muslim countries and DACA immigrants (legal and law abiding) and silence of the murder of H1B holders and other American minorities.

Trump's supporters don't give 2 shits if some black person has been in America hundreds of years before the Trumps got here or if a white person goes to the Synagogue. They are supporting and benefiting from the myth that there is only one type of America, the white Christian kind.

Restaurants are notorious for abusing undocumented workers. Especially on the high end.

he's been vocal since the election when he cancelled his contract to open his restaurant in the Trump DC hotel. He's an amazing chef, and amazing person, and he's a man of great principles.
