Newt Gingrich, a longtime supporter of President Trump, on Tuesday called for an "independent person" to lead White House efforts examining the alleged communication between Trump's campaign team and various Russian officials.

"Well, on that particular topic, they ought to take a lesson from the past, from Ronald Reagan and others," the Georgia Republican and former House Speaker said during an interview with "Fox and Friends."

Gingrich said the independent outsider should seriously examine the matter and "coordinate" the administration's efforts in response to the controversy.

"Find a very smart, independent person, maybe somebody like Michael Mukasey, the former [Bush era] attorney general, put them in charge of the whole project and say, you know, there are questions here, the country has questions, the media has questions, even members of Congress have questions," Gingrich said.

"You better have one person who coordinates the administration on that topic, because it is the kind of thing that can grow. … The earlier they have a central person directing their efforts, the less problem it will be, the faster it will go away," he added.............................................
