General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsTrump finally gives a speech with limited crazy and Sessions crushes the next days news cycle.
When Sessions was nominated I predicted that it actually was a good thing because
There is an even bigger upside to Sessions. Unlike other positions like Perry in treasury where you can get the top lobbyists in the energy industry to give you a list of things to do the Attorney General needs to have a deep and sophisticated understanding of constitutional principles, precedents and complex legal strategy. . . Sessions will very quickly be over his head and will cripple the Trump administration
but that was based on basic logic. Only Nostradamus could have predicted that he would actually commit perjury in the hearings.
So lets count the ways Sessions has helped us "win":
1) Kills the only positive news cycle Trump has had since he took the oath.
2) Going to ruin the roll out for Muslim Ban 2.0
3) Elevates the Russian scandal and undermines every statement the administration makes about it.
4) Makes the selection of a Special Prosecutor almost certain.
5) Opens up Sessions to what is going to amount to a "Second Confirmation Hearing". I think it is clear that Sessions never developed a lot of friends in the Senate and there will be a whole bunch of Republicans who will be grateful for the opportunity to show how "independent" they are. That includes everyone of the Senators that ran for President who Sessions undermined by giving an early endorsement for Trump.
Just think how happy Graham is going to be to bash the archetypical typecast of the prejudiced Southerner, especially one that has been so bigoted to gays.
Sessions is about to discover that his family is in desperate need to have him close by for more frequent family time but I hope that he lingers because Sessions is the gift that will keep on giving us wins and I am not tired of winning.

(53,061 posts)In the end if we can't get rid of him Putin will leak everything to get him replaced.
The US will end up with numnuts Pence and years of instability. During the Iraq/Iran war the US would tip the balance to keep the war going. Putin will be happy to yank the cord on Trump and have a weak President for 3 years. He will have destabilized not one winning Presidential campaign but two.

(28,324 posts)Trump, by Putin's standards, is not a wealthy man. So while Trump IS desperate to keep Putin happy, Putin really has no real motivation to return the devotion, especially when Trump becomes useless.
And he is.

(128,527 posts)For some reason, I don't think they are quite at the back-stabbing stage yet. So many are either knee deep in this or are so invested in the power of having the executive and legislative branches - and notably with respect to Beauregard allowing their home states to run roughshod over certain citizenry without worry of DOJ "interference", that IMHO, they will circle the wagons around him... at least to start.
Once they feel secure in the belief that they would not be taken down too, then they might consider throwing him under the mack truck.

WASHINGTON ― Key Republicans in Congress are questioning whether Attorney General Jeff Sessions should recuse himself from any investigation into Russias role in the election. House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) called on the former senator to step aside Thursday amid reports that he failed to disclose conversations he had with the Russian ambassador to the U.S.
...
Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), a frequent Trump critic, and Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-Idaho) also called for Sessions to recuse himself.
...
If there is something there, and it goes up the chain of investigation, it is clear to me that Jeff Sessions, who is my dear friend, cannot make this decision about Trump, Graham said during a CNN town hall.

(128,527 posts)and be investigated for perjury, keeps their powder dry. They envision doing this will neuter the story - particularly since he even offered to do so himself. No harm, no foul in their minds.
So they ain't ready to shovel him under yet.
He holds the keys to the info that needs to be covered up and is the rare one who is cognizant about how the federal government actually works and notably, the DOJ (vs all the other idiots who were nominated- like Carson, who I saw just got confirmed). And as previously reported, Obama tried to spread it around so it wouldn't get lost within a single point of failure location and at least slow down what is probably going to be an attempt at a mass purge of info.

Meanwhile I just saw that Drumpf came out to say that he has "total confidence" in his lyin' AG and that he shouldn't recuse himself!
