(10,500 posts)"Tyler's death was the only one in presidential history not to be officially recognized in Washington, because of his allegiance to the Confederacy. He had requested a simple burial, but Confederate President Jefferson Davis devised a grand, politically pointed funeral, painting Tyler as a hero to the new nation. Accordingly, at his funeral, the coffin of the tenth president of the United States was draped with a Confederate flag; he remains the only U.S. president ever laid to rest under a foreign flag."

(4,387 posts)I don't forgive or forget what GWB did to this country.
But I think it's interesting, in the context of Trump and a separation of eight years, that I can better see the person GWB is behind the politician. Nobody is 100% good or bad. And while he seemed like evil incarnate 15 years ago, now he's like a puppet with the strings cut.
I don't think it's "short-term memory loss" to acknowledge that, stripped of any power to hurt us or anyone else, GWB has a few good qualities that can be enjoyed in very small doses.

(13,390 posts)The time distance and distance from what he could do to influence our lives influences my view. But really, I'll take anything useful he can give because what is happening at this moment to influence my daily life is much more relevant right now.

(42,736 posts)He has all the money he wants and he has no future political aspirations.
He's not trying to gain and hold onto power. The whole Iraq war was so he could be a war president and win in 2004.
Plus, Cheney's no longer pulling his strings.
Still, I'll take his digs at the Orange Abomination. They might wake a few "conservatives" up.

(13,390 posts)His laugh, his smile his "lack of intellect," having no clue what it would mean to have a president who didn't smile much less laugh. Or that it was possible to actually have a proudly inarticulate and ignorant, entitled and hateful individual as president.
So much of what I thought about him seems like hyperbole in retrospect. My cynical interpretation of the fact that he spoke spanish was way off base. I didn't buy his self depracating humor at the WH correspondants dinner.
I always thought he was in over his head and essentially following orders. But I now see much of the fear and anxiety I had then as typical partisan worry. I blame him and his administration for the hyperpartisanship promoted by his administration and participating in starting wars. But, I don't see him as truly cold blooded. It seems like he truly regrets and takes responsibility for the wars.
The fact that he has been making media rounds an getting in digs at the administration is pretty revealing and actually gutsy. I appreciate that he's doing it.

(13,390 posts)I agree that Rove and Chenney were pulling the strings. I also think he was pretty arrogant at that time though.
W seems surprisingly humble now, talking about the media as a force to hold "people like me" accountable. I can't decide if it's overconfidence or modest courage that is driving him to show these paintings, but I know how brutal it can be to receive negative criticism of creative work. It's a pretty big risk to the ego.
I've been seeing some conservative friends being transformed by their liberal kids.
This is all very interesting.

I won't forget that his father signed the ADA and he signed amendments to undo damge courts had done to the original law. He also tried to implement a decent immigration policy. Those are diffirences that matter when evaluating character.
The white supremacy embedded in the response to Katrina is still infuriating. As is the white supremacy embedded in every single presidency prior.

(2,072 posts)used the solidarity of 9-11 to push us into a fabricated war with Iraq. This introduced Al Qaeda into Iraq which contributed to the insurgency that lead to a long and drawn-out conflict. This bred resentment and hatred which played a part in the creation of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). ISIS extremism spread across the Middle East playing a role in the refugee crisis. Refugees trying to escape this extremism sought shelter, mainly in Europe. ISIS planned or inspired attacks across the world stoked fear and xenophobia. Russian and nationalist groups prayed upon that fear to spread propaganda in order to divide international coalitions and to elect people allied to their agenda.
This is not, of course, a complete picture. It's a broad stroke, but it paints an uninterrupted line between Trump and person sitting across from Ellen.

(65,157 posts)But I just can't feel anything warm towards George W. So many lost their lives in the Iraq invasion. We are still paying for that invasion. 9/11 should have been prevented and may have been LIHOP/MIHOP. He caused what was really a depression - more than a Great Recession. Yes, Trump is more of a threat to our Democracy. But Bush did a lot of bad.
