"But what was going on in the meetings was unclear to the officials, and the intercepted communications did little to clarify matters the Russians, it appeared, were arguing about how far to go in interfering in the presidential election. What intensified the alarm at the Obama White House was a campaign of cyberattacks on state electoral systems in September, which led the administration to deliver a public accusation against the Russians in October."
So does anyone really think the Russians didn't go so far as to manipulate the vote count if they attacked state election systems?

(27,811 posts)Someone here who's smarter than I am had it figured out. Really, only about 40,000 votes needed to be flipped. The 80,000 was the margin, but you could change fewer than that to move the electoral votes.

(505 posts)They actually attempted to hack (or successfully hacked) the election systems. That is unbelievable.
I'm so glad that RW politicians in Germany have been unable to introduce electronic voting machines so far. IMHO we have the best election system. It's all pencil & paper, and anyone is allowed to stay at the polling station during the election, and when they count the votes to make sure everything is handled correctly. Then accumulated vote counts are sent to the election manager, who just adds up all the numbers and publishes the results within a few hours. So if there's at least 1 trusted person at each polling station, who makes sure that everything is handled correctly and the correct numbers for the district show up in the final results, it's almost impossible to "hack" the election.
Basically, only postal votes are susceptible to manipulation in Germany.
Also, early preliminary results are available 1 second after polling stations close because forecasting based on exit polls has been pretty reliable in the past. So there's not really any need for electronic voting machines. I don't understand why some countries trust computers with the most important thing in their democracy. (I have a Masters degree in Computer Science, so I don't ever trust computers.)

(9,524 posts)attempted hacks in a number of others. And also reported in MSM was hacking into the Election Assistance Commission databases but I didnt see who did it. I just don't believe with all the hacking going on that they would stop with just hacking into voter reg databases.

(70,102 posts)the recent stories about the russians whose plane was tracked to campaign stops underscores something i have been saying-
i think the cheeto circus trips to podunk, usa were not in search of votes, but marks and cronies.
i guess i have to get on the tweet machine. i have been wondering this since nov. what was the vote count in towns visited v similar towns not visited. start in those obama flipped counties.
i think they were there passing out bribes, and getting promises, maybe even passing out software.
i think it was hacked, but it was hacked from within. prolly w the help of russian money.
the obama administration was watching for outside interference and would have blown the whistle if they had seen anything. i dont think they could have pulled it off w all those eyes.

You know what IT guys call a machine they can't audit? "Compromised."
